most of the time i have no problems w/spelling whatsoever - it was always my easiest & best subject in school... however, i have difficulty w/the word similar. that's the correct spelling, but it looks wrong to me. seems like it ought to be similiar, like familiar!

Yep. One day when I was working as a secretary I went to type the word "doesn't" but no matter what, it looked weird! I asked the girl next to me and she couldn't spell it either. Soon we had 2 sales guys working on it too. Then boss came in, then the shipper. None of us could figure out how to spell the word "doesn't" LMAO

I ended up using "does not"

It's strange. Spelling was always one of my worst subjects. Once I started chatting online with friends my spelling improved because I didn't want to look stupid, and I can now remember how to spell some very long impossible to sound out word and spell foreign words (that aren't adopted into English already).

I sort of have a similar problem while speaking, I'll completely forget a word or forget what it means. That's something that's only popped up in the last 3 years or so and DH gets too much entertainment out of it.

Of course, if in doubt http://dictionary.reference.com/ bookmark it.

That's because aluminum is wrong wrong wrong. Elements do end in "ium" including aluminIUM!

I regularly find that words look weird. Rhythm. Now there's an odd looking word.

I've often looked at a word and thought 'how did that make it into the english language? or any language for that matter!'

And there are many times I've said a word and thought it didnt sound right. Ever see Tommy Boy when the nitrous oxide is leaking into the cop car they're driving?

Now- this reminds me of a story years ago when I was about 13 or 14.

My aunt came to town to visit our family, and we went to the mall; at the entrance to the parking lot was a sign:

"No Semis Allowed."

My aunt turned to my mom and asked her, "What's a see-mis?"

RO AD That part was halarious. Also, didn't that happen in the movie Black Sheep with Chris Farley and David Spade?

many many times - I also have the same problem that f I stare at a word too long it looks goofy - that and I have mild synesthesia, so I get it in colour too!

This is what my alphabet looks like:
a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z

This is roughly what a sentence looks like to me

Or at least, this is as close as I can get to it with the limited colours we have on the website!
So as you can see..... all of the words I stare at can get pretty goofy.

I had a teacher in high school who made us write some commonly misspelled words over and over and over to help us remember them better. I was so screwed up after that as they started looking wrong to me. It took me years to feel comfortable with spelling them.

Worst time I had with spelling was when I could not remember how to spell the word "the". Could not figure it out.

I find a lot of folks have trouble with the correct usage for: to, two and too; their and there; and I often see incorrect usage of lose and loose.

Spelling was my best subject but there are times I'll look at a word I've written and it doesn't look right when in fact it is. I think you are probably no different than the rest of us when it comes to that.

I tried to PM this to you Pixietina - but you can't recieve PMs.....

I don't know if you know, but synesthesia is where two senses get a little mixed up - for example hearing and taste - some people can taste music. Certain sounds will make them taste different flavours... for example my name would taste like strawberries or something like that. In my case it's sight and sound, my inner monologue will also bring it up - so different words come out as different colours. I don't necessarily see those colours physically on the page, but I see them clearly in my mind. As you saw, each letter in the alphabet has it's own colour... but when they are all strung together as words, there is a dominant colour for the sound of the word. "Colour" is a yellow word - even though individually those letters are yellow, black, black, black, orange, green. "Pixietina" blurs a bit like a ribbon from yellow, to deep purple and then screaming red on the very end where the "a" is.

My cats names look different too - Tosca is a deep pink-purple colour with a yellow twinkle where the c is and then a red flare on the end. Bootie is a deep blue with a white and peach flicker on the end. Rune is deep sea green. I think it all depends on the sound of the word.... if it's a harsh word, then I'll see harsher colours in abrupt shapes... the softer the word, the smoother and softer the colours. It's a very subtle difference in the colours.

For reference THECATSITE - is deep purple, bright yellow and soft forget-me-not blue. There is a red flare at the A and a soft peachy smudge at the Es... it's very pretty. One of these days I'll draw them all. It could make an interesting painting project now that I think about it. I wonder why I didn't com up with it before.

Is there anything else I might be able to explain to you, or just something you're curious about? A lot of people simply don't understand it at all - it's nice to meet someone who's curious! Most others think I'm slightly insane!

I couldn't remember how to spell the word "ask" not too long ago. I was going crazy! What a simple word, but A S K.....oh my. I also have a problem with "beautiful." Why on earth does it need an A in their?!!! I'm always have to refference the movie "Bruce Allmighty" because he says "B E A Utiful!" That's the only way I can remember that gosh darn A!!!
