Looong day.

I've been watching the news but I had to turn it off... I sometimes get too close to it and I get paranoid. Anne, I pray for you and all of the people in the countries threatened by war. That is so scary... and I just can't picture the puppets on the children's program having to do that. Here, the puppets play hide and seek, teach numbers, sing the ABC's. It's just not fair. I wish all the children around the world could watch puppets that play hide and seek, instead of explain war. I wish the world could all join hands and be peaceful.

Got my math grade. I'm sitting at 31%. I'm so disappointed. I went in for extra help, I did all my work, and I still don't understand. I have until June to get this mark up to par or else I have to go to summer school. I wish the numbers made sense to me. I just don't understand anything. **bangs head against wall*. It's my first 'F'. My brother says we have to hang my report card on the fridge. (I usually get A's and B's.) But I'm so scared I won't be able to get into college...ahhhh! I've wanted to be a nurse ever since I knew what a nurse was. If I can't get into college I'll be crushed.

Stay safe tonight, everyone. I'll be thinking of you all, that your families are safe and your days can be happy.

Jenn, I have always had a problem with math, too. No pocket calculators when I was in school. Algebra was a total mystery - its the only "F" that I ever got. Still can't figure percentages and interest rates.

I'm getting really nervous too. I was just watching CNN Headline News. The 48 hours Saddam Hussein was given to leave Iraq have gone by, and I'm really afraid of what might happen...

Anne, this is so much more horrible and difficult for you than it is for us. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family and for your safety during this war.

I can figure some of those out but it's the massive long questions that I have a lot of problems with. And factoring. Ahh! It all looks like a foreign language to me. And word problems. Here's some of the problems I have for homework tonight:

The function h=-5t+20t+2 gives the approximate height, h meters, of a thrown football as a function of the time, t seconds, since it was thrown. The ball hit the ground before a receiver could get near it.

a) How long was the ball in the air, to the nearest tenth of a second?

b) For how many seconds was the height of the ball at least 17 meters?

and...

The enormous temple Olympeion was constructed in Athens, Greece, in 174 B.C. The base of the temple is a rectangle with a perimeter of 300 m. The area of the base is 4400 meters square. What are the dimensions of the base?

Uh... ?

Jenn,

Please don't feel down. My sis-in-law (who I'd take on as a sister in a heartbeat) has always had problems with math. Well, I am so proud and tickled to say she's getting her Bachelor's degree in May! And, she's starting a Master's program in Social Work this summer. Don't think this is something you can't get over, I believe you can. I think a fear of math (or any subject) can make it harder. I'm sending you happy math vibes (I don't know how that looks, maybe lots of numbers?). Good luck!

Oh Christy, that is so great!
Stories like this always make me feel better.
Thank you for your encouragement. It means a lot to me. I'm just really frustrated...all my classmates pick up on this stuff really easily and most of it is "review", but I still don't understand it. My math teacher says someday the lightbulb will go off and I'll pull 80s. I sure hope she's right.

Thanks, and many congrats to your sister in law.

Thank you, Poh (I'm sorry, I don't know your first name). You are so nice to be willing to help me! The problems will probably seem horribly easy to you, but for some reason I usually get them wrong, or don't know how to start them in the first place. The two I've been assigned tonight that don't make sense to me are in this thread ^^^
and I'm PMd them to you, just in case you wanted them there.

Thanks a lot.
I have a test next Tuesday... if I could at least understand the "bare bones version". I might be able to pass.
All my classmates remember this stuff from last year, but I don't remember even seeing it, lol.

You've got my sympathy. Sorry that I can't help. Couldn't help my own kids, with their math homework, either.

Jenn, I've just finished a chapter on factoring in algebra... I was alright at it (I understand the concept, even if I don't always execute it right. If you need an extra help person, I'm available.
