hi, i need help.
i have a 7 month old spayed female, since we got her at 2 months old she has become sick every 3 to 5 weeks. she gets very bloody(bright red) diarrhea for about 4 or 5 days and then is fine again.
we have taken her to the vet numerous times, had her feces checked for parasites 5 times and changed her food about 6 times trying things with different proteins.

NOTHING IS WORKING!!!

she continues to get diarrhea right on schedule every month or so and the vets are giving us no help. it doesn't slow her down at all, she still acts like a happy kitten and eats well, but i am getting to the end of my wits because shes got long fur and it gets everywhere, the walls the floors, all over her.

Any ideas would be great, its not parasites, which is everyones first guess.... thanks,

Sounds like feline IBS. Get a second opinion, period. Any kind of new blood as opposed to old blood being passed is a concern. If it doesn't seem normal to you, listen to your gut. You might have to press your vet for a "level 2 referral" to an internist. If you need a referral and can't seem to get one from your primary vet, and don't want a new vet for a new, primary second opinion, you can contact Dr. Shriner, Veterinary Internist, in Seattle (Issaquah) WA for a referral up your way. He is widely known down here and probably could point you in the right direction, as he graduated from Washington State School of Veterinary Medicine - which has some Canadian grads, as well....
Good luck with this! Get a second!

You have had your kitten for about 5 months and have changed food 6 times already. When you switch the food, how exactly do you go about it? Do you make a slow transition from Old Food to New Food over a period of, say, a week to ten days? Or is it more like Old Food on Day 1 and New Food on Day 2?

If it's closer to the latter, it sounds like you might be switching food too quickly for her system. Diarrhea is the typical result of this, even in adult cats. Kittens seem to have more sensitive stomachs.

Also, are you referring to dry food, or to canned food? The slow transition is more applicable to dry food but a deliberate canned food changeover is also beneficial.

Mind you, this would not explain the bloody stool. But it could be causing / contributing to the diarrhea.

yeah, the food switching sounds like too much but that doesn't explain the blood.

I wonder how often cats go into heat when they aren't spayed, is it once every 4 weeks or slightly longer? Maybe something went wrong with her spay surgery and it wasn't done effectively? That's a total shot in the dark... or maybe there is something wrong with her intestinal track so when she does get diarrhea (from the food change?), it's triggering something in there that is making it bleed?

I hope you get the answers you need!
