I've mentioned that my mother was pretty good with cats. (I just wish she had understood the spay/neuter thing, and had kept them inside!) One thing she did was to make her own eyewash for kittens with crusty eyes. She used boric acid, which she got at the pharmacy, and made a very dilute solution, which she would put on a soft cloth and wipe around the eye. She never had a kitten that didn't clear up and see just fine.
I was looking at my bottle of Opticlear, which is used for cleaning cat's eyes. It says its "active ingredient" is purified water, but it lists boric acid as one of its "inactive ingredients." Interesting, huh?
I have not seen boric acid at a pharmacy in a long time. I wonder if it's even available?
