Valium for seizuresz

Is valium typically used to treat seizure disorders for cats? My cat's blood work is fine but she is having seizures so is on valium.

This is likely a ??? for a vet actually it is ... but since I adopted a dog with epilepsy my vet told me valium does the job for seizures without alot of side effects

in cats valium can cause liver failure. So please have your vet monitor liver function on a regular basis while your cat is on this medication.

pretty much every antiseizure med causes liver failure in humans or animal thats why they do so many liver panels

Valium can be use to treat seizures, but there are also a lot of other different medications that can be used that work better than valium. I am definately not a specialist when it comes to seizures, but like to think I know more than most since Squeeker has been having seizures since he was a month old. So here goes:

Phenobarbital, Clonazipam and Gabapentin are all three of the medications he is on to control his seizures, but every case is different.

1. How long has your cat been having seizures, and how long do they last?
and how old is your kitty? Any possible trauma?

2. If the bloodwork was normal then what did the vet say was their thinking as to why your cat is seizuring?

3. I would get a second opinion before continuing constantly on Valium alone, it is harsh on the liver (as are most meds), but it can only last effectivly in the body for about 4-6 hours max, that is why Phenobarbital, although possibly has to be given up to three times a day builds up an effective dose and seems to last longer.

4. I wish you and your kitty the best of luck in finding something that keeps seizures from happening, they are a hard thing to watch your kitty go through.

As I mentioned before I am not a dr. but have had almost 3 years of experience with kitties who seizure and Squeeker's seizures even baffle the neurologist here in town, so I understand what you are going through and am here to help if I can.

The vet speaks English as a third language so it's hard to communicate but he said she has seizures due to brain damage from the poisioning in Jan. He chose Valium bc he feels it works. She gets 2 mg twice a day. He said she will NOT need liver tests but will do them to make me happy. He feels she may need valium for life. Sigh

get the liver panels. ive had epilepsy my entire life and ive taken pretty much every antiseizure med on the market (the same ones they give to kitties) with the exception of one or 2, they cause liver problems.

diazepam (valium) is metabolized in the liver!

good pt but .... just a FYI that I just learned is the same in humans and cats / dogs ... metabolized there does not = can damage ... I too thought that till my vet set me strait about my dogs antihystamine ... see the dog HAS liver issues and I was leary of continuing a drug that the liver broke down...

How often should I take her in for liver panels?

atleast once a year, unless she has problems then every 6 mos.

im well aware of that. i was merely stating that AEDs can cause liver probs and liver panels should be done as a precaution in to catch liver probs should they develop.

i was stating the fact diazepam was metabolized in the liver b/c i thought their vet was ignoring that fact completely
