My friend who is on a fixed income rescued a cat around 2/14/08. The cat had what looked like dread locks under its neck, so she cut them out. She took him to the vet who didnt seem concerned at all about the areas. She also noticed that more hair is coming out and looks thin in some areas. For the last two weeks. she has developed severe hives every night. He doesnt sleep with her. She is itchy all of the time. The cat is getting worse, has had some eye drainage and a few other spots with crusty areas and lumps. We thought it sounded like feline scabies.

We took the cat to a different vet explained how my friend who was never allergic to cats before this, suddenly is having this hive and itching problem and the cat is getting worse. She first told us to stay off the internet. Then said it was probably stress related . Told her to buy some aloe juice and gave her cortisone pills.

Anyone have any ideas? She can not really afford to keep going from one vet to another. (She is currently on some homeopathic remedies for her itching) She is heartbroken because she loves Maxx. Help !

It does sound a lot like scabies, but it could also be ringworm or other types of mites. Find a vet who will actually do a proper workup on the cat (skin scraping, ringworm culture)! If you give steroids to a cat with either parasite, you are in for a heck of an unpleasant ride. The cat will get radically worse, and anyone she comes in contact with or that visits her home could become infected.

Ya know, I'd even advise filing a complaint with the State Veterinary Board and maybe the Board of Health for failure to perform basic diagnostics in the face of a potentially zoonotic (transmitted from animals to people) and extremely contagious disease. Neither will actually do anything beyond a nasty letter, but it is possible that she could get her money reimbursed; ask for it in the complaint. Here's a great site that explains veterinary malpractice and how to file a complaint: http://www.aldf.org/resources/details.php?id=73
