5 week old kittens are not ready to be weaned yet. Kittens will continue to nurse until they are at least 7-8 weeks old and should not be given away until they are 10-12 weeks old. My 5 week olds are eating canned food because they see their momma eating it. They do still though nurse on her. It just takes time.

Then you need to clip their claws. They are much to young to wean off of her.

I don't attempt solid foods till the kittens are 6-7 weeks old - too frustrating to try earlier if mom is nursing them well.

And I start trimming the front nails on kittens at 4-5 weeks old for mom's benefit
Just lay the kitten flat on its tummy and very carefully nip the tip - not any further on the front nails. I'm used to trimming nails and have no problems, but its a little more tricky with tiny kittens.
