A friend of mine came to my house this evening, he had pictures of his horse,
which were sooo graphic I can't even begin to tell you! The horse was sick
and his neck was starting to swell, so they took him to a vet, who told them
he could do anything any other vets can do, so they left him my friend decided to go check on the horse 5days later, seeing how he hadn't heard from this vet. so he did, he went in the office and the girl working said the vet so out on a call that he would have to wait, well he didn't want to wait,
so he told her he was going to look at him anyway, she asked his name , he told her, and she said, you cannot go back there! he did and he said he had to grab the bar on the stall because when he saw him his knees buckled and he thought he was going to faint! What I am wanting to know is what group do these pics need to go to? He tried calling the State Board on the vet but they all hang together, he paid 10,000 for her, and was about to sell her for
25,000! she was taken to Texas A& M she is still in awful shape, what can he do to hold this guy responsible, or who should he contact? Would the ASPCA
BE one of them?
thanks for any input!

So the horse was sick...and is now worse because of negligence of the vet???

I don't understand..why would he leave the horse for 5 days without even calling the vet to see what was up? What was the diagnosis? I think he'd have a hard time proving anything, seeing as the horse was sick in the first place...sometimes they don't get better, no matter what the vet tries.

call the houston SPCA pronto! And I am sorry but shame on him for not staying on top of the care. When my horse had to go the vet, I wanted to sleep in the stall with him. I was there every day during the testings and all the procedures.

I'm also confused......

There are MANY vets in every area of the country that she could have called to have them look at the horse. Or she could have loaded the horse and taken it to see another vet. Some vets are great with horses, some aren't. You need to keep your options open to other vets.

Our main vet is 7 miles away, but we also have 2 backup vets, one a few miles away, and one 20 miles away. I definitely think she should have called another vet and had them come out.

When my mare was hurt I called three different vets and all of them were going to come out, but I needed someone who could perform surgery on the spot. It took about 30 minutes for the vet to come out as "an emergency visit."

I really don't know every detail, I do know that everyone can't be everywhere
they need to be at all times! That is all of his problem I just needed to know if anyone knows who to call first! I'll scan the pics, I know that the horses neck was starting to swell, maybe his wife was bringing the horse somewhere,(A&M) and became worried whenever she saw the neck swollen? I don't know, and that is why is brought it to that vet, wherever she was at the time!(town she was passing thru) ??? but the horses whole neck has been totally blown out, burnt, or something!OMG! iT is so terrible looking!!!!!!!!!!!
if you have a weak stomach , don't look! it is like it exploded, he thinks the vet put a really strong medicine into the IV some kind of lenament that burns,
the name of it was something DH--? maybe wrong I don't remember ya'll that have horses may know all I remember was he said 'D' something or another? it will take me a min to get the pics on here!
I'll be back on here with pics!
thanks!

Yeah, I'm a bit confused too, about the post...

ETA...

it looks like the horse was bitten by a poisonous critter of some form, and what is happening is the necrotic tissues are sloughing off big time. That would have explained the swelling as well...eventually it probably just burst because of the pressure alone. That sort of wound will take a LONG time to heal, and I don't think it is necessarily the fault of the veterinarians involved; plus if the owner didn't even call to check in on his 25k horse for five days???? That in itself is odd...I would be there every moment I could be if my horse were injured in such a way...

That was my first thought too...that it was a poisonous bite or something. If it was just a regular cut that got infected it shouldn't have gotten that bad in 5 days. Of course, do you know how long her neck was swelled up?

My kitty, Little One, got a bad infection from getting into a fight with a crazy tom. She came home and was limping a little bit for a few days, then it got worse. My MIL (who is licensed to doctor her goats) came down to take a look at her, and we started to try to drain the wound with peroxide. But, we realized it was too deep, and took her to the vet. He basically did cut her leg open and treated it from the inside. It looked SO nasty, but it was the best thing for her. So, it could be that the vet did something similar. Open wounds are never pleasant to look at and usually look worse when in fact that is what is needed to make them healthy. Probably the vet assistant didn't want him to see because the vet wasn't there to explain what was done and she wasn't qualified to explain it to him.

You may want to suggest to your friend to actually talk to the vet before reporting him to any authority. Right now, you don't know the whole story, and apparently neither does the owner. I also wonder why he waited 5 days before checking on his horse....

Monica, I think that is correct! Whenever he went to check on her, the
vet came up and he said, that the vet couldn't even look him in the face, he kept his head down looking at the ground, couldn't stand still! The only thing he told him was that he had done everything he knew to do. Like I said, I don't have all of the complete details! The horse didn't look like that whenever
it was brought into the vetl which the vet is 3 hrs away from here, anyway,
sure do hope you get to come for the Texas Meet up!! We will have a blast!!!!

Is the swelling around the throat? That's suggests a disease called 'Strangles'. It's incredibly infectious and the horse must be isolated away from other horses. I'd recommend getting a lawyer, calling the police and sueing that vet for negligence, Immediately. After getting the horse to a proper vet first of course and MONITORING its care. Poor little thing. :~(

Good luck!

That horse needs to be loaded up and taken to a horse surgery specialist. Horses can only live for so long with something as horrible as that. I don't understand why the horse isn't somewhere being treated right now?!!!!

My horse didn't look anything like that and she spent two days in a "horse hospital". Your friend needs to take that horse somewhere before it dies! There is infection and there is no way that horse can come back from something like that without regular vet care. I can't imagine how much that must hurt! Another thing to worry about is flys. Flys are good for a wound to a certain point, but that horse has an extreme problem.

I also wonder why she didn't worry till the neck started to swell!!!!!?!!!!! Is she crazy?! My god that's an aweful wound! I notice it is spreading to the throught under the face. If I'm seeing the pictures right? This wound cannot be left untreated/unseen any longer, there are a lot of vital things in that area very shallow from the skin.

But I don't understand why she doesn't find another vet?! The vet cannot be blamed unless the horse is under his direct care.

How is this horse doing???

To be honest, the vet may be looking poorly, because he has a poor outlook for the horse; and with a wound that extensive it is not too unlikely that the horse could die, even with the best care.

I still would want the entire story, and also, if this isn't your horse, you really shouldn't be talking about the situation on a public forum...just my opinion; if it was yours, yes, but it's not, so really...
