Howdy all,

This is Matt, and I am the litter-box authority in the house, particularly because my wife is 10 weeks pregnant (though I did this job for years before just in case).

Anyhow, our two cat, Blaze and Stormie, are basically poop factories. The daily scooping and such has just worn me out and is such a mess (did I mention that my wife and I both take a full load of Seminary classes and work 25-30 hours a week? ugh!).

I've seen where cats are toilet trained, and we have a spare bathroom that they have already completely taken over, so why not try?

I looked around and found some training material form CitiKitty (link below). If the cats would do business with the toilet rather than the box-o-rocks, my life would be so much easier!

Is this viable or do I run the risk of them whizzing on our couch after training them to this method?

You can try, but its hard enough doing one cat let alone two cats. Most people don't have much success - you might get 1 out of 10 or 20 cats to actually be trained.

Personally, I think its a waste of time. I don't find it a chore to be scooping pans.

Mine are all LitterKwittered, I did all 3 at once and don't think it was any more work than doing 1. I just went a little slower to make sure they all 'got it'

Mine haven't had any accidents.

I agree. But perhaps you should consider something in between such as one of the automatic scoopers that are available.

I've never tried to toilet train my cats (don't really fancy the idea of coming home to a toilet full of cat pee and poop
and I've always thought it could end up being a lot more time consuming and messy than scooping a litter box). But I do wonder why cleaning the litter tray is such a chore for you? Maybe you could find a better litter that makes it easier? I use clumping clay litter and find it very easy to scoop the box twice a day. It only takes a couple of minutes to do and I just scoop the soiled litter into a nappy sack and dump it in the bathroom until I can take it out to the bin outside.
