Many animals are mentioned in the Bible, but the domestic cat is not. And yet, the Hebrews had to have some knowledge of them, due to their contacts with the Egyptians.

Why do you think dogs are mentioned, but not cats?

It could be the same story as Adam's first wife Lilith. Egyptians held cats with high value so Christians saw it as pagan and evil so somewhere along the translations it got deleted.

That occurred to me, too, but dogs were also considered "unclean" and were supposedly not kept as pets in Israel, if I understand what I've read.

Of course, the big cats (lion, tiger, leopard) are all mentioned in the Bible.

It's possible that they were mentioned. However, there are many books written that were not publshed in the Bible, and in fact were censored by the church. So it's entirely likely that some of the unpublished books spoke of them.

I Googled it and one of the ideas that popped up was, "like toenails, maybe there wasn't any reason to?"

My first thought was Noah's Ark and since all species were included there were cats and dogs on it.

Then I goggled for cats and Judaism. Cats may not be mentioned in the Old Testament but there sure is Jewish law on them! Here is the link:

http://www.jewfaq.org/animals.htm

You can skip to the section titled Pets.

I found some of the laws... interesting. I am glad that I got Butzie from the shelter already spayed.(I don't think that many Jews follow that law). The part about not having your dog fetch the paper on the Sabbath made me

I goggled Catholic law and pets and I found this:

http://acatholiclife.blogspot.com/20...heir-pets.html

Saint Philip Neri had a cat and he is the patron saint of Rome.

I stopped after two religions.

I understand there is at least a good deal of evidence Mohamed was a cat lover. In fact, some say the "M" on a tabby cat's head stands for Mohamed.

Doesn't the Pope have a cat? I could be wrong but I thought I heard he did. Or that he likes cats.

Oh, of course cats are mentioned in the Bible -- who do you think the word "God" refers to, anyway?

(Yes, I know, somewhere there's a bolt of lightning with my name on it...)
