I received the letter below this afternoon, and wrote to the address given and got an update later, which I'll post below the letter:

This is a very sad situation. My friend Deborah is experiencing very serious health problems and has been hospitalized. Gwinnett Animal Control came and got her cats and they plan to kill them in 3 days because they have decided she is unable to care for them. Descriptions are below. She has had two of them since they were just a few days old and they are now 12. I am willing to go pull them if we can find a place for them to go temporarily or permanently. I am also willing to provide transport within reason. One of them has been adopted, but I'm not sure which one, yet. Please, please pass the word. Time is of the essence.

Rhys is a tabby/Siamese. He talks like a Siamese. I have had him since he was 2 days old, he is now around 12. He will tolerate the other cats but the only cat he has ever been close to is Joram, the black cat. He liked to sleep on the pillow next to my head.
Joram is solid black. He is very personable and sweet. He is very flea allergic. He will get along with any other cat I have seen. He is 12 also.
Kini cat- She is black with white markings on her tummy and a patch on her neck and toe. She is a dominant cat but will get along with others. She loves to be petted and loved on. Kini is 5.
Prince is black and white. He is incredibly sweet and loves to sit on your lap. He gets along with others especially if they will clean his head. He has a little tiny meow. He is 5. He also is a bit flea sensitive.
Charmer was named for his main personality trait. He is gold and white, quiet and affectionate. He loves to get his tummy rubbed and likes to lay near you. he does not liked to be picked up or held much, But will lay down near you and roll over any chance he gets. I have never seen any of the other cats get upset with him or him with them. Charmer is only 2 and still playful.
They are all fixed and as I said need their shots. I can not believe this is happening and I would never have wanted to lose them. Thank you trying to help.

This is in Gwinnett county, which is just east of Atlanta.
The update: Kimberly told me when I wrote to her (since I wasn't sure how old the original, forwarded letter was -- I was told it had been sent out just today) that a local and highly respected rescue group will be taking all five kitties from the shelter early next week. The shelter has agreed not to euthanize them, and instead will wait for the rescue to get them.
And Kimberly has also heard from people who might take the three younger kitties. However, she still hasn't heard from anyone who wants to adopt the older two, and the adoptions of the younger cats aren't certain yet, either.
