Don't know if this belongs in this forum, but I'll post anyway. I'm going to be purchasing two kittens from soneone who's cat is about to have a litter she says she will let them come home with me once they have their first shot. My question is how soon is too soon to separate a kitten from its Mother? Is there a preferred length of time that I should wait before taking the kittens?

Thanks.

Kittens really shouldn't be separated before 10-12 weeks. They need extra time with Mom and sibs to learn good cat etiquette. Good that you're taking two - they will keep each other company.

The ideal time to adopt is 10-12 weeks minimum. Even better to wait till 12-14 weeks. During the first 10 weeks the kittens learn important cat stuff related to behaviors and social development. Separating them before 10 weeks can cause the kittens to have behavior or social problems.

Besides, the kittens will nurse up to 10-12 weeks old if mom allows it. Just cause they are eating solid foods by 8 weeks old, doesn't mean they are ready to leave mom and siblings.

Your friend really should not be adopting them out before 10 weeks old.
