ludicrous!

Just how stupid is this current administration and what is wrong with Congress that they don't put a stop to this, period? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see the dangers.

Yikes I understand the need for the research facility, but when I was a child, there was an outbreak and I still remember my father and the other men rounding up tires, and shooting the cattle and burning the carcasses. Many horses were lost, too.
And considering the outbreak in Britain that happened in these days of modern technology.......

I've had hoof and mouth. Twice.

Not very bright, could cause a huge economic loss for the ranchers. But it ain't ebola.

An outbreak will cause more than a huge economic loss for just ranchers. The impact of euthanizing millions of animals, food source and non food source will hit everyone in this country. The price of meat alone after such an outbreak will be prohibitive to a good portion of the country.

Setting this country up for such a severe economic impact is insane, when there is no reason for it. If a new lab needs to be built, then build it on plum island and keep the safety regulations that have worked for decades in place.

Z, the disease you had is called hand, foot and mouth and it is caused by a different virus, although in the same family as animal form of foot (hoof) and mouth disease.

The last recorded case of Hoof and mouth in humans was in 1966. It is extremely rare in humans.

Oh well it has the same symptoms! I wonder why they called it that?

I suppose I didn't think very hard about the price of meat. I don't eat it, so I don't know how much it costs anyway.

It could do us a world of good to stop eating meat much anyway-- the price of grains is going up in part because we have to feed so many animals so that we can then eat them, and cattle-raising uses a TON of resources that we don't really have.

I wouldn't wish a viral outbreak on anything, but the economic impact of becoming less meat-dependent wouldn't be all bad. More resources for everything else, less fossil fuel usage, means the price of all the other food and everything else would go down.

Do they need the island for something that's a real threat to humans?

Wow, haven't they heard of Britain?
Our farmers lost so much money and time that they had invested in their herds. And over zealous DEFRA people had other animals killed as well. One farmer I read about lost his pet goat (who was kept in a secure separate pen) and was heartbroken. The compensation was minimal too.

OMG that's a horrible scenario whether you are a meat eater or not!
How could he be so stupid? (Oh, wait...this isn't about oil, sorry...)
The picture compliments the story perfectly...there's Bush looking like a bewildered idiot. As usual.
