Tonight's NBC newscast carried a story about a famine in Haiti. The island doesn't grow enough food to support its people, so it relies on imports -- and imported food has now increased in price so drastically that the people simply have nothing to eat.
People in Haiti are making "cookies" out of butter, water, and dirt.
It makes me sick and ashamed that anyone on this planet has to eat dirt to survive. There's no excuse for letting that happen to people -- we humans have to be better than that!
Haiti is so tiny that it wouldn't take very much money to do a whole lot of good, and I hope the U.S. government will step in and get some help to these people. But under the current administration, that might not happen -- this White House doesn't have much of a record on humanitarianism.
So I wonder if any of you know of a way we could help -- a reputable organization we could contribute to, or even a church that's sending a mission there and could carry along a large quantity of food. Any ideas?
