My cat has a periodic problem with both constipation and defecating outside the litterbox (probably linked). This problem has grown worse in recent weeks, with no other apparent changes in health.

She's going to go to the vet soon (needs vaccinations anyway), but until then I was wondering if there was any sort of stool softener for cats. I've tried mixing some natural (soybean oil based) hairball remedy with some wet food for the last few days but it hasn't worked well.

If your cat is suffering from chronic constipation, like my cat, then I would ask about Kristalose. It's a prescription powdered medication that you mix with food. It works very well for Buster. There are also over the counter medications, such as Colace. However, I do not recommend you administer medications without the consent on your vet.

GO or CALL your vet and ask .... Chronic constipation can be life threatening
