Is it okay to get her spayed with a runny nose/sneezing?

Snow, my approximately 9-10 month old female kitty has not been spayed yet. It was put off in the past because she had chronic diaherra from from the time I got her last December until about early March. She has FINALLY got over that, and hopefully it won't come back because the vets were never sure of what was causing it. After that I put off the spay surgery because she had a runny nose and was sneezing. It seemed all last week that she was better from that, so I scheduled an appointment to get her spayed later this week. However, yesterday it seemed she was again sneezing and had a runny nose. Other than that she seems fine: eating and playing normally. Is it okay to get her fixed even under the sneezing and runny nose conditions? I have heard it's risky to put them under anesthesia with URIs. I feel like I've just been putting it off and putting it off and she's almost 10 months… I don't think she's ever "REALLY" been in heat (if she has been, she hasn't been meowing, rolling around, etc.. like I've heard they'll do). But I don't want to wait too long to have her surgery because I'm planning a big move in the next couple months and I want her to have her spayed and healed by then. What should I do? Should I keep her spay appointment?

I would check with your vet, but maybe you could push the appt. out a week. By then you will know if the runny nose and sneezing is a URI. If so, you will need an antibiotic to take care of that before the surgery.

What my vet did was this:

Start on anti-biotics 7 days prior to spay appt.
Spay the day of appt. after checking for a temp.
Then put on another 7 days of anti-biotics post spay.

Many vets will not spay, or do any surgery, if the kitty has a temp. Puts them at increased risk for complications.

I don't think a vet will anaesthesize a cat with a URI - it could be dangerous. Even a human doctor wouldn't operate on a person with a bad cold - too much risk of complications.

You will need to speak to your vet about this matter and he/she will advise you.

I'd talk to the vet. I don't think I'd put her under with her sneezing now. May cause complications. Not sure how they handle surgeries with chronic URI's

Thanks guys.. well.. I guess this surgery is going to have to be put off again.. but I would rather do that anyday than risk losing her!!

Since she used to have chronic diaherra the vets usually were wary about giving her antibotics or other medications for her URI.. it was more that I gave her Little Noses, nose drops and a lysine supplement (although I don't know how much the lysine has helped her).
