Ok, so I've been reading all kinds of stuff on birthing kittens - placement for the mother, potential problems, necessary equipment... and I'm starting to get a little scared. I work most of the day and I really doubt I'm going to be home when Shinobi goes into labor, so I worry that something's going to go wrong and I won't be there to help. I've been thinking about asking a vet if they would temporarily house her until she has her kittens, so someone who knows what to do is there when she gives birth. Is this a good idea? I know it'll be an unfamiliar place for her, but at least she'll have someone watching her.

Cats have had kittens on their own for a long time, so I wouldn't worry too much. About the best you can do is provide a good place that is safe, warm, and dry.

I'm nervous too about Salem having her babies, but as Mr.Blanche pointed out, cats have been having kittens for a loooong time w/o our aid or help.
I really don't think there's no need to worry, unless you run into any problems.

Good luck!

I an sure you are worried about your baby and her babies, but like the previous posters have been right about cats giving birth for years without human help.
I think she will be less stressed in a familiar place. Make sure she has a nice, warm birthing nest that she knows is hers. 2 if yo have room. She still may not give birth in it, but at least make sure it is hers if she needs privacy. If you work nearby, you could drop by during the day, or if you have a web cam you may be able to peek at her occasionally, or if you have a trusted neighbor maybe they would check on her.
Sending out prayers and healthy baby and mommy vibes to all of you.
