We just moved from our apartment with our one cat, Mitties, to a house with another cat and a Boston terrier. The dog couldn't care less about Mitties, just sniffs her and walks on. She is terrified of him, but that's not the issue. The issue is the other cat. Sneakers is an inquisitive cat, and wants to be Mitties' friend, but she won't have it. If he gets too close she will hiss and swat. It's been two weeks since we've moved in and I know it will take time. Mitties spends most of her time in the back bedroom, all day and night, and only coming out to eat and use the litter box. She seems perfectly happy back there, but in the night is when I hear the spats. Nobody has been hurt, but will they eventually learn to love each other? Or will Mitties forever hate Sneakers? I hate the tension!

Well their relationship would probably be better if they played together during the day and not just at night (when cats normally come out to mate), but if you have no choice, better safe than sorry. It does take time and it may not ever be ideal - you'll just have to wait and see. So often females make a big fuss because they're afraid of the males so that might be part of the problem for now anyway.
