Tonight my boy Ernie started hacking like he was trying to get up a hairball. This continued for about 45 minutes on and off and then all of a sudden stopped. It sounded so awful and I felt so bad for him, but there wasn't anything I could do. He didn't throw anything up which I found very odd. Have any of you had the same thing happen with your cats? This isn't the first time it has happened with him, but tonight went on a lot longer than in the past.

45 minutes seems like a very long time. I would watch him very closely - he could have an obstruction. If he doesn't eat or throws up foamy liquid, I would get him to the vet. that he's ok!

Thanks for the well wishes! Ernie is fine now........been about three hours since the yacking incident and he's sleeping and before that he had something to eat. Trust me, I'm one of those obsessive/compulsive folks when it comes to the cats and when something strange is going on I watch them like a hawk! Not sure what was going on with the yacking, but it seems to have corrected itself thank goodness! Even during the yacking he was chasing the other cat around the house.
