Cat Scratching The Floor Before Drinking Water

My cat Nacho sometimes scratches the floor before drinking water from his water cup.I have seen this behavoir in other cats also.Does anyone know why this is so?

They usually do this with a bowl of food and that's when their supposed to be burying it, but i don't know about the water?

You used the word 'cup' when describing the 'bowl', and I wonder if the cat would be happier with one of the 'fountain' type of containers which simulates a more natural effect of running water (cats seem to prefer those to the smaller, non-moving one that may taste stale to him very quickly).

Thanks for the reply.Nacho drinks his water from a cup as he prefers it When we adopted him from the SPCA for some reason he did not like drinking from a bowl.

Ollie does this too!

He has 2 of those big like soup mug things (which he loves) and a bowl - he drinks out of them all and I've seen him dig at all of them... he doesn't do it every time, just randomly - idk, beats me what it's about haha

My cats will do this as well, in addition to covering their food with whatever's on the floor. Don't know what it is.
