I've been poking around some of the websites trying to get some ideas, that looks very good, just a question on the brackets that he used. How did he finish off the insides of the rooms so that the screws and bolts don't poke the cats?

I'm not sure, I'll have to ask and get back to you. I stapled the upholstery material over the inside "walls" of the 2 houses but I'm not sure what he did.
Oh goodness. DH just saw this thread and now he's muttering to himself about what kind of wood we should get.
He did a really impressive job, Linda! It fits right in next to the fireplace, and looks both sturdy and cosy.
Robert's sole attempt to build a cat tree was a disaster, because he insisted on actually using a tree trunk. He spent a couple of days taking down the tree, transporting it to the house after it had "cured" long enough, and then never managed to get it stabilized enough for actual use. His pergola outside, on the other hand, is just perfect for cats to climb.

He made it specifically to fit into that area right down to the cutout at the back for the heating vent. This past weekend he had to take it apart to remove a bit on the side next to the window to accommodate the new verticals because the base was preventing them from going all the way to the floor. As usual he did a great job and you can't tell he removed any of the base.

John is and always has been a perfectionist no matter what he does. My best friend Debbie always says that if she wants something done right, she'll ask John to do it for her. He bolted it from underneath the platform it sits on, right into the 3/4 inch plywood. He measured about 3/8 of an inch to the centre of the wall and drilled straight in so the screws would not go off course and protrude into the house. He glued and covered the top of the platform with carpeting first and had previously marked out where the house/supports would sit and had the channels cut out of the carpeting for those (he says that was not necessary but that's how he wanted to do it). Then he screwed from underneath into the sides of the house. For the uprights he made a cutout in the carpeting the exact size of the wood frame, put on a block that fit exactly into the centre of the uprights, then screwed the upright into the block from the side straight in. By doing it this way with the blocks, he could fit the tree together. Once he was satisfied with it, he finished off the bottom of the platforms with carpeting and then put all the screws in to permanently hold it together. It also allows him to take it apart easily to replace any carpeting that's been scratched and damaged and also makes it easier to move should it be necessary although he made it specifically for that particular spot in our home because of the air vent.
