what?! my cat wont eat sheba now

nane loves sheba.. but,

I opened the Yellow "Chicken Dinner With Sauce" few minutes ago (seemed to me nane was hungry)
nane was happy until I poured some, nane smelled and backed off as if..?
whats going on? don't like chicken? I don't know what to think.. help me please...

cats are funny like that, so who really knows

Is she acting normally in every other respect? Drinking same amount of water? Eating same amount of her other foods?

Cats can be finnicky. I bought Matilda the By Nature Organic lobster pouch once and she gobbled it up. Bought it for her again a week later and she stared at me like "you expect me to eat *this*?"

Well, I would say Nane doesn't like chicken.
My Persi will eat just about anything you give him including root beer floats. But he will back away from shrimp! There's lots of foods that I will back away from too, like liver and okra. Yuck! I can understand a cat not liking certain things.

aright thank you both. nane seems fine, sleepin comfy.. if the food isnt eaten within a few hours I will try diff a different sort . tx again

Oh boy! They sure can. Abby only likes dry food but within the last few months she's started to eat a bit of Fancy Feast Grilled Salmon on occasion. When she wants some she jumps on the table and lays down waiting. I only give her about a tablespoon because she never finishes it anyway. Sometimes she eats it all, sometimes just a few pieces. Chynna is an eating machine, but she's become a picky one! Her taste changes from one meal to the next. She refused to eat Friskies once she discovered Abby's Fancy Feast. Now she refuses to eat the Fancy Feast and instead wants her Friskies again

If everything is ok with her othewise, try mixing up the foods a bit. Give her different flavours. She might be bored with the same thing all of the time.

^ Have you offered your girls any of the FF melodies? They're pricey at anywhere from .75-$1 per can but sometimes there's sales or I have a coupon and will get a few cans for my boys. The melodies smells really good, even to me.


I've noticed some of the Sheba tubs don't have a lot of smell to them and my boys won't eat most of the flavors. They really like the tuna and mussel, which smells horrible.
I should probably get them Sheba more often, DH is supposed to get some 50% off deal on anything made by Mars.

I am not one to give people lectures about the food they feed. I used to be a food snob, but having a sick cat has changed that. The only concern I have about Sheba is that I am preety sure that I saw a note on the containers staying they do not meet all the recommended nutritional requirments for cats. I.M.H.O. If you are feeding it as a treat that is fine, but if you find a note like that on a can of food it is not safe to feed as the cats only food. Fancy Feast is what we have dubed the kitty crack. It's not the best food, but it is all 2 of my cats will eat. I don't like feeding it to them, but it is considered complete nutrition. One of them likes the florintine flavors of F.F. Medolies.

At those prices, I would think those foods would only be treats or offered occasionally. Even .50 cents for one of those little Sheba tubs would be too much to make it a regular food.

Yup, the Sheba isn't supposed to be a daily food. It's not a well-balanced meal for kitties, it says so right on the package.

I feed Chloe lower quality wet than I feed Matilda, because otherwise she wouldn't eat any wet. I gave her one of the Science Diet Kitten pouches yesterday (chicken) and she loved it. It has meat byproducts (unnamed) in it but it's a wet food. I feed her a pretty decent dry food too so I don't feel awful about it, and I am always trying to get her to eat higher quality wet food by mixing stuff in it that she likes (cheese, junky wet food, etc.). I bought her a can of Iams Kitten to see if she'll eat it, the ingredients are better than Science Diet but they do animal testing so I'd rather feed the SD.

wow this forum is nice, i like =] I don't know why nane isnt too happy with sheba (she does seem thrilled somtimes) well im starting to not like sheba myself.. today i'll take a nice walk to P&C buy some Fancy Feast and FF melodies.. dont remember buying em before, thanks good people

Fancy Feast isn't a very good quality food either (it's known as kitty crack around here ). Sharky has some better quality foods listed and recommended.

I got 6 diff kinds (FF melodies)to try.. turkey I opened first, she likes prolly as much as I liked my eggs.. ill see then what not to buy.. =] [Sakura sry forgot to answer to you] I dont give her water she drinks out the toilet.. should I buy her water?or some special healthy drink? and if someone can tell me which kind of dry foods are good. bless! my cat is extremely picky with dry food only seems to eat dry food when theres absolutely nothing else for her. ty

I would recommend a pet water fountain rather than letting her drink out of the toilet. Since we got the fountain both our cats drink a lot more water which is good for them.

My Mittens will eat anything. however, Monster will ony eat Fancy Feast, i kno its not good, but i want him to eat. he prefers the Elegant Medleys. but they have several different flavors & they come in a delicate sauce, savory broth, or this whipped egg souffle. Monster doesnt like the egg souffle kind, but last night i went out to buy food & i normally buy the 12 can boxes, since its easier that way. but i was also lookin at the seprate cans & they had this kind that is tuscany & i bought a few of those too. Monster likes em so ill continue to buy them. he is a picky eater too.

Both of my cats LOVE the Fancy Feast Medleys. I buy them if I have a coupon or if they are on sale. So it's a nice treat for my cats. Medleys are cheaper per can in the 12-pk. Or if you find them in the sample 2-packs (usually 2 cans for $0.75 or so).

You don't need to buy her water, but you should leave her a stainless steel bowl with tap water out for her at all times. I like water fountains, they are nice to have around. Cats don't need a special water, but why not feed them from a bowl that is clean instead of a toilet that has bacteria & cleaning product chemicals in it? Gross. I know cats seem to like it but it shouldn't be their only water source.

It's good that your cat would rather eat wet food than dry food, wet food is much better for her.

For dry food, you have to be consistent and feed only 1. You can't change dry foods on your cat quickly, any change in dry food has to be done over a period of at least a week (start out by mixing a little of the new food with the old, and as the week progresses you just give slightly more of the new and less of the old). What pet stores are by you? How old is your cat? Avoid anything sold at grocery stores, they are junk. For the price, Authority (at PetSmart), Nutro Max, and Nutro Natural are all good. Other good dry food brands that you'll see at PetSmart & PetCo: Royal Canin, Avoderm, Blue Buffalo Spa, Halo, Natural Balance, Organix, Solid Gold, By Nature Organics. If you live by a good mom & pop pet store, look for the even higher quality dry foods: Wellness, Chicken Soup, Taste of the Wild, Innova, Evo, California Natural, etc.

This means walk right past brands like Friskies, 9 Lives, Fancy Feast, Science Diet, Whiskas, etc. Iams is not too bad but not ideal.

For the wet food, Fancy Feast is not a good food (I think people only brought it up because cats love it, it's like their version of McDonalds). I would try better quality brands first. Any wet food made by the brands I listed above would be excellent. I would try Nutro Max first because it's good for picky eaters. I feed Fancy Feast maybe 1-2 times a month as a treat.

See i have always thought that FF was a good brand while growing up, so when i started Monster on wet food it was FF..then on here i learned FF is junk, & tried EVERY better brand at the petstores. but he wouldnt eat it at all, no matter how hungry he was so i started buying FF again. i dont want him only on dry, so i just gave in and started the FF again.

That's pretty much what happened for us too. And I haven't had any of my cats' vets (we've moved around a lot) tell me I was feeding my cats horribly. Two have been cat specialists. They were more concerned that I was feeding wet food as part/most of their diet.
