spastic licking

Every now and then, my cat exhibits some really weird behavior. She'll be sitting normally and all of a sudden she'll start spastically licking at her feet or chest (although she normally misses) and sometimes her back fur starts twitching as well. This is not normal grooming for her (she's actually doing that right now) and it seems to be uncontrollable. It will only last for a few seconds and then she'll be fine. She doesn't have fleas. She's done this a few times a week since I've had her (about a year) and she doesn't seem to have any other issues. I was just wondering if anyone had seen this behavior before and might know what's going on with her.

It's normal, most of my cats do it at one time or another. If it was carried to extremes - like looong sessions where she seemed to get rough with herself, where she seemed unable to stop, then you'd ask the vet about feline hyperesthesia (not dangerous, but bothersome), however a minute or two a couple of times daily is not a big deal at all.
