Our family goes to a Catholic Church and the attire is very casual. Although we do dress up on occasions. And of course some people are more old-fashioned or formal. I guess it depends.

I don't go to church anymore and I never plan to. BUT I used to for most of my life and it was very casual. Pastor wore jeans on occasion even. People could come in jeans and a hoodie or a nice dress or sweater and it didn't matter. There was also 2 services, one very traditional one that sang like hymns or whatever they are called from a hymn book. And the second one was all contemporary Christian pop music and upbeat and stuff like that. For churches it was a pretty good one, very open and accepting which was cool. I suppose if I ever went back to a church for some reason it would be that one. The pastor was cool and would tell jokes and embarrass his kids and wife and show movie clips and reference things he did or saw, etc.

Yes, church isn't as stuffy as it once was. At least the Pentecostal ones that I've been to. I somehow think that if it's a Catholic or Anglican church that the whole experience from the service to the dress code, is more "formal", and that "Midnight Masses" would also be more "formal."

That's how the one in Maui was. We walked in an were immediately greeted by a lot of people - even the pastor. What impressed us was the pastor knew almost everyone there and if they had a birthday that week or month and mentioned who had them

Also one of the greeters asked us what state we were from (MN) and she told us "my son lives in MN"; we asked her where.........turned out her son lived 2 towns from where we lived - talk about a small world.

At the end of the service there was a lot of music and dancing in the isles - service was over but people stayed at least 1/2 hour just enjoying the singing/music

They all made you feel very welcome and at home (even had some songs in Hawaiian which was cool to sing and read)

My church is very laid back. Most weeks I wear jeans, though some people dress up more. My pastor has even said before that they will never turn someone away because of the way they are dressed. Your heart matters, not your 'shell.'

Even in the churches that I've visited with friends or when I've been away would be fine with dress pants and a nice top. I can only think of one church around here where long skirts is the norm for women and girls, and even they aren't so bold as to tell someone to dress that way there. So I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just pick a few to visit; get to know them, and take it from there.

But I suggest you also look for one that teaches the Bible - and not just want they think people want to hear - that's very important.

The only times I ever go to a Christian church is to attend funerals / weddings / baptisms. In those occasions, I try to dress up a little (no jeans). But if you want to go to any religious service, I would say wear what you're comfortable with. If people at the church don't like it, maybe that's not the right church for you.

Business casual, ie nice pants and a blouse or sweater, should be fine at just about any church, except one that's ultra-conservative.

I go to Catholic Mass, usually at my neighborhood parish, and you'll see people there in a wide range of attire from jeans to men in suits and a tie and woman in fancy dresses.

I usually try to get a little dressed up, but have been known to show up in jeans and a sweatshirt on Sunday mornings when I'm trapping kitties (like today).

I think the most important things in chosing a church to attend is that it's a place where you feel welcome, experience a sense of community and are comfortable enough to worship or pray in meaningful way.

We have two services at our church (methodist) a traditional and contemporary. Mostly older people attend traditional and dress nicely, shirt and tie for men skirts and dresses for women. At the contemporary service we are extremely casual--nine times out of ten I wear sweatpants and a tee shirt. We have a wide range of members from homeless people to millionaires so we aren't picky on what is worn. Our pastor always says, its that you are here that matters, God doesn't care what you wear.

The church I am interested in has a traditional service and a contemporary one...I wonder if I should go to the contemporary. I wasn't sure of the difference.
but casual is better for me for sure.

IMO you'd probably like the contemporary better then the traditional. If you think you'd enjoy a more upbeat and not the slow/boring songs or sermon, go with the contemporary.

We are so used to the more modern upbeat songs now (with a few trad. ones thrown in) that when we went to a Lutheran service for DH's grandfather, it was really boring to us

Okay, I have narrowed it down to 2 churches:

The first one is a very small, old brick building..and its called "Church of the Epiphany". It says "all welcome" on the sign.

The second one is a big huge, upgraded building that looks like a school! This is the one that has both traditional and contemporary sermons. Its called "Gospel Temple".

I will talk to Josh and see which seems more like his church I guess.

I am so lost

I'd definately give a few a try - There is nothing wrong with church "hopping" - Its an important way to find the church that is right for you!

If you are trying new churches, then obviously going for a less casual dress approach would be best until you know the lie of the land!

Good luck, and let us all know how it goes! Sounds like this guy is definately a keeper

You can find me at Disneyland!!!!
In my church men are expected to wear suits and ties and women are expected to wear either dresses or skirts. Although no one will be turned away in anything they wear.

We go to church to worship our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. One way we show our reverence to them is in the way we dress.

Have you decided on one? Hope you find one you feel comfortable with attending. To be safe I would just go with business casual, usually is a safe bet IMO.
