Hyperventilation?

This morning I was walking down the hall in my house and Pepper was directly in front of me. My boot heel caught in the rug and made a noise that scared Pepper and she puffed up her little tail and ran away as fast as she could.

When she stopped running she started breathing really hard. It sounded like a woman doing lamaze with the really short breaths. I know that sounds weird but that's what she sounded like. She did this in 2 or 3 spurts and then seemed to catch her breath and was fine. There was no panting or anything else. Did she hyperventilate? I have never had a kitty do that before and quite honestly, she scared me too!

She seems fine now though
but I would still like to know what that was.

Any ideas?

Actually, she could have been showing annoyance. Instead of growling, my Zek usually does something that sounds like lamaze--"huff, huff, grrr"--when he wants Odo to back off. He was probably trying to scare away whatever caused him the fright.
If it happens again though or if it seems like he couldn't catch his breath, you may want to have a vet check out his heart--heavy breathing can be a sign of heart disease.

Thanks! That makes a lot of sense. Pepper was just at the vet 2 weeks ago and got a clean bill of health so hopefully she was just frightened. She made me nervous that's for sure!
