It was my birthday and my girlfriend bought me balloons. One was the fancy type birthday balloon and then three regular balloons. She brought it to my apartment, the cat saw them and freaked out. She would not come out from under the couch for 5 hours. Finally i moved the couch and got her out from under it and she scratched me all over and ran into the closet in my bedroom and wouldn't come out of there. We got rid of the balloons but now she won't go out of my bedroom because she is scared that the balloons might be there. I have carried her out there numerous times to show her the balloons are no longer there but she is still extremely scared and scratches and hides. It has been a week since we got rid of the balloons.

Oh my.....that's quite awhile! Poor kitty must have had a heart attack!!!

I'm not sure what to do other than give the kitty time to calm down. She might just be worried the balloons are still there. I say give her time and see what happens.

Do you have catnip? That is a great calming agent! A good brand and freshness is important.

Wow - my guys love balloons. The rexes had a ball with them. I'm not sure what to suggest other then to bring her to another room (room by room) and make sure she cannot run anywhere else and sit there and play with her.

If she likes treats like cheese, try bribing her with a line of cheese to the other rooms.

Leave the doors open to the other rooms and let her explore by herself at night. Leave some food or treats on a saucer in the kitchen to see if she's coming out on her own when you're not around or awake.

Do you feed her from a certain container or feed her any wet food? Often the sound of food being scooped, poured, or opened is a good motivator to get a cat to come running. You could also get a container of treats and start giving them to her in the room she's in, just one or two a day so she will associate the sound of the container being picked up or shook to getting a treat. Work on luring her out.
Food works wonders with cats.

Nothing is working to lure her out. She is still scratching and growling and hiding in her closet as deep as she can

Don't pick her up and try to force her. That only makes her feel more insecure. Try getting a Feliway diffuser too.
