Well, it's the first time I've had a cat of my very own. I had cats growing up but I'm a college senior now and will be graduating in two months, and I just bought my first cat. He's purebred, neutered Turkish Angora named Bandit, he's eight months old, and he's a hyper little boy who loves petting but hates to be forced to sit still.

He's not a lap cat at all, which is a little unfortunate because I really want a lap cat, and I'm hoping maybe as he gets older he'll calm down enough to want to sit on my lap for more than a few seconds.

I'm working on figuring out what my next cat will be ( I'm going to be working for a year, then going to medical school, so I won't be home much during the day and I don't want Bandit to get lonely). It's tempting to get another TA, but there's so many breeds out there and I've been fascinated by cat breeds since I was a kid! DSHs are lovely too, and are much bigger than the cats in my home country (I saw a brother/sister pair in a shelter the other day that I could've fallen in love with but I think three cats might be too many just yet). So I'm trying to narrow down a breed list, and I'm also leaving open the option of getting a cat from a shelter if I can find one that matches the personality I want. I'm looking for a lap cat that doesn't need too much grooming and that's still a little active, but not a complete maniac. I'm going to be talking to a Cornish Rex breeder tonight, but I'm worried they might be too active for me. Ragdolls used to be my dream breed, but I'm not sure anymore.

Anyway, hi!
And here's a picture of Bandit:

he's a real beauty! welcome to TCS! i can highly recommend a shelter cat - mine is a wonderful pet!
oh, & Bandit will definitely calm down as he ages - he may turn out to be a lap cat after all!

OHHH nice looking silver/white TA
And yes, as he gets older he will settle down. Rexes are an active breed but are excellant lap cats. I bred/showed Cornish and had a TA at one time - they got along well

You might consider a retired rex as they would be a little more settled but still good lap cats. Burmese are a good lap cat and little grooming - more medium in activity

I'm glad to hear he'll probably calm down! Not that I don't love his activity. There's something charming about waking up at night and finding out that your cat is sitting on the back of your desk chair, attempting to catch the wind chime you have hung from your ceiling. But it would be nice if he could sit still for a minute! He doesn't mind brushing (and seems to like it a bit) but he doesn't like the being still part.

I am definitely open to retired cats/older kittens/shelter cats. I like knowing approximately what I'm getting myself in for.

He's certainly a handful but I love him. I'll keep looking into Cornish Rexes, and I'll see if there are any burmese breeders nearby too. And I also keep a watchful eye on petfinder too!
I'm going to be volunteering with a nearby cat shelter soon, so maybe I'll find my next cat through them.

An older shelter cat might be exactly what both you and your cat need! He'd be calmer, probably, and more inclined to sit on your lap. At least, that's the plan... And your present cat will make sure they both get enough exercise.

Welcome to TCS! None of my indoor cats are really lap cats either. I think the best bet would be getting one from a shelter that is known as a cuddley lap cat. Bandit is adorable.
