Actually I was born there too.
Maybe your Great grandmom wanted to get the ladies together for your Mom's birthday!

I am glad your grandmom is doing better. Sending lots more vibes.

Under the cats, mostly.
That's good news that there have been some improvements!
Let's hope it continues that way!

And as a side note - grandmas are very special people - and grandchildren are god's compensation for growing old

Well there is some good/bad news tonight.

Gram is feeling better. We can tell because she's been very stubborn and feisty. We know this because she insisted on getting out of bed last night and fell. In order to keep her in bed they had to restrain her.... I guess at some point she calmed down, but for the last few years she gets in moods every few days like that where she can be just downright nasty. We know it's from her strokes, but it is hard to deal with. But as my Mom said, maybe it's good the doctors and nurses saw one of those episodes so they can help us know what to do.

But really, her getting restless and all like that does tell us she's feeling better. I've been praying the new plan with the nurse and physical therapist would help with these 'spells' too. I know it's not something she can help...I'm just enjoying my Gram when she's still here! Which I hope is for a few years yet. She's counting on me to give her the little red headed boy she always wanted.

Aww My Nana did the same thing.
It's a good sign though.
Many continued vibes.

I know just what you mean about these "spells" -- my father had them too, especially when he was in the hospital. Something about being there can cause a sort of temporary dementia, and older people are prone to it anyway. Being restrained may worsen it, too. But at least she's physically better, and thank goodness she didn't break anything in the fall!

How long before they think she can go home?

My Mom called me on my way to work with an update. Gram has begun hallucinating and has not slept. She's acting very anxious. I also found out that when she got all combative and what not the other night when she fell, she rippedout her pick and her catheter...

And now Mom just spoke to my Aunt again. My Gram has been moved to the nursing home where my Aunt is the office manager. So far the only diagnosis beyond the UTI is Dementia and Depression. Both we knew about. But can dementia really just worsen suddenly like that? My co-worker (I work for a Neurologist) said that UTI's can affect the brain. Gram hasn't been medicated for the depression because she was having too many side effects with what her doctor had given her for it.

The good news with this is that she's in a good place to recouperate. My Aunt doesn't believe she will go home again, but we never know is what I'm telling myself now. The nursing home is within walking distance of my Aunt's house and she will keep a good eye on her there. Part of me hopes that in a nursing home she can make some sort of friend. She's been very lonely the last 4 years since her stroke has cost her her freedom and a lot of her mobility. I know most everyone who is there will probably be in a similar situation to her, but still. And now she can get professional care instead of my poor Grandpa trying to do so much with her fighting him. He's a few years older than her and not 100%, but still pretty darn good! I just love them both so much.

Oh, I'm so sorry... yes, dementia can come out of nowhere, get worse, get better, all very abruptly. Just moving from the hospital to a more home-like atmosphere may help her. And being allowed to sleep and wake on a normal schedule can help, too.

If I may suggest... maybe you could bring her some things from her home, like a bedside lamp, some paintings and photos for the walls, a bedspread she likes... things like that can help her feel less out of place. You could load one of these digital photo viewers with family pictures and just let it cycle through all the time, so she can watch it when she wants (and brag on her grandkids).

And we found that my father just loved watching old movies and TV shows from the period of his life when he was in his prime. (Andy Griffith was his favorite.) It was a completely undemanding form of recreation for him, when he got too tired to read much anymore... and it was so good to see him laugh!

You're so lucky to have a good, safe place for your grandma, with family looking after her. I hope she feels better soon.

Thanks Carol.
I'm going to pass along the ideas to Mom and see if the next time she talks to my Aunt or Grandpa that she'll see if they've done anything like that or she can pass the ideas on.
