My little old doggie Jello will sometimes do a long, scary howl while he is sleeping. He always wakes up because of it. I know he was dreaming, but is it more like a nightmare?

My girl does that too. Makes you wonder what they're dreaming about. Funny thing is I've tried to get her to howl with me and she only does it when she's asleep.

Gracie use to howl in her sleep. I would try to wake her up slowly. Now she starts kicking and whimpering.

Does he act scared when he wakes up? If not, it probably wasn't a nightmare. I would say extreme wimpering would be sign or a nightmare instead of howling. I would guess he was just dreaming of the moon, or joining a fox hunt. As long as he acts ok when he wakes up he should be fine.
