Surely I'm not the only one that notices one or more overweight office cats whenever I'm at a vet?

I had one come up to visit me today that was huge!

Dry oily coat, dry skin, and he didn't look like he could clean up his back end.
Another I've been to had a fairly overweight white and tabby, and when I made a comment of "my, you're a big sweet kitty, aren't you?" the vet said "she steals food".

So I'm not entirely sure these are all cases of possible health caused weight gain. I've seen a few slightly overweight office dogs too and the animals are always very social with everyone so it doesn't suggested a new rescue.

Is this common? What's people's views on vets, who should know all the health risks of obesity, letting their office animals get that heavy?

(Please move this if it belongs elsewhere - I wasn't sure were to put it because it wasn't stories or health concerns for my cats.)

To be honest I have never seen office animals at any of the veterinarian offices I've been to. I know some vets, technicians, other employees have pets, but not there. I can only imagine that if they are office pets, they aren't getting the exercise they should be since everyone is so busy and getting way to many treats. Thats sad

I usually only see office animals out during early morning appointments, so if you go later that may be why you never see any.

The cats always have a fairly decent area to wander about, but I've yet to see any cat trees or anything more interactive for any of them.
Actually I just suddenly remembered the large orange cat at the one vet office gets to go outside some! I remember seeing him outside a few years ago and noticing his size then.

My vets resident kitty Fred isn't fat, he's in excellent condition. Has things to play with, isn't free fed and you aren't allowed to give him treats.

Our vet has 3 cats I believe but all are very healthy looking. One was a bit over weight but the vet tech said they had only just gotten him and were working on the weight. (She was amazing he was sitting on my lap) Our vet also has kittens in the lobby from area shelters that need homes. (but they are in a large cage)

The vet office I used to go to had a very overweight Himalayan "office cat" who always looked unhealthy. My current vet's office does not have any animals that live at the clinic, but my veterinarian often brings her German Shorthaired Pointer who is in great shape and does agility. There's also a little fluffy white dog of indeterminate breed who is often there, I think he belongs to one of the vet techs...
