Hi,

My friend who works at the shelter with me just rescued three kittens. They were alone in a wet box outside (it's really cold in Montreal these days). They are two weeks old. Their mother is a feral, from what the guy that found them told us. So my friend is very disapointed, because she wanted to rescue both the babies and the mother, but somehow the mother managed to escape (she was in the cage, but fighting so much she was able to open the door of the cage and run away). My friend had to go to the hospital, because she got bit very hard and it wouldn't stop bleeding (it hit a vein). Anyways, now the kittens are orphans and I don't know much about this and neither does she.

She feeds them every 3-4 hours (20 ml of KMR). She stimulate them to urinate (it seems gross, but it's very important for us to know: is it normal that only urine comes out?). She keeps them warm. She brought them to the vet and they are supposed to be healthy. My friend is very disapointed because she thinks they have less chances to survive because of her. I told her that their chances of surviving our winter outside (in a wet box) with their mom going away to find food were already very slim. What is your opinion on the subject?

Any help and tips would be apreciated. I will post her questions here, because she only speak french and I know how helpful is this forum. For now, anything that could help her take care of those three little babies (that I haven't seen yet, but there's two males and one female), knowing that we both have cats, but never took care of baby kittens, would be a gold mine for us. We want them to be happy and healthy. We also want them to be able to learn everything their mother would have taught them. From using the litter box to cleaning themselves, etc.

Thanks in advance from me, Chantal and those 3 little darlings.

I think the most important thing is their weight! Your friend should weigh them every day at the same time, they have to grow about 10g/ day

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
This is an invaluable site for information on how to hand-raise kittens: http://www.kitten-rescue.com/

The MOST important thing right now is KEEP THEM WARM!

But pretty much everything your friend will need to know is there.

They should be pooping.

Also, FYI, the way the vet techs at our hospital do it, they just hold the rear-end of the kitten under warm flowing water while massaging the abdomen. Of course you have to towel them off and wrap them back up again, but it's less messy.

to your friend for being such an angel!

Thank you to both of you. I have made a ton of research on the net and am now translating everything in french so that my friend understand it! I must have worked 5 hours on the subject in the past day...I hope it's worth it. It's always between -15 and -25 degrees here in montreal (with lot of snow). Do you guys think the kittens would have been better off outside, but with their mom, rather than inside without her? I tend to think that if they were healthy and seemed fine they should have stayed outside, but again, it's hard to tell because of the cold and the fact they were in a wet box...I will go see them today, maybe it will help me have a better opinion on the subject.

So, thanks again and I'll be back with updates on the kitties,
Marilou

Don't torture yourself about the decision that you made. Yes, it is good for them to be with their mama. But not good to be outside with no shelter in such extreme temps. Contact some local shelters and see if anyone has a nursing mama cat. The maternal instinct is so very strong that it is likely the mama would accept the babies. I have seen it happen.

Bonne Chance!!!
