Tonight at work I was helping a lady and she was talking with another lady about what she wants to get her daughter for her birthday. I heard her say that she doesn't want to get a gerbil because it is too much like a rat and she already had a guinea pig that died. Then she said that she was getting her daughter a hamster because she will have it for a month and then the cat will eat it and thats the end of that.
Not only is that extremely mean to the hamster, but then her daughter will have to deal with losing her hamster.

I couldn't believe that. People like that do not deserve to have pets.

thats totally wrong!! Oh man, I still remember how it felt when I was 21 and came home from family vacation to find my hampster cage open! His little lifeless body!! He dragged himself into a closet so he wouldn't be eaten... he bled to death!! That was the last time I let mom come over to my house and take care of my pets!!

I wish there was a way to stop people for buying pets for them to be demolished!! Its so wrong...

They should be able to do background checks for all people getting a pet! Whether it a rat or a cat!!

Oh man - I'd tell her if she doesn't want the hamster after a month - then give it to you!

BTW hamsters can live up to 2-3 yrs
I loved my Peanut - he was so smart and tame. Even took him outside to stuff his face with clover. I cried when he died (probably was about 3 yrs old). Never got another one after that cause I knew there wouldn't be another hamster like him

I wish I could have said something to her. It was at work so I couldn't say anything.

Geesh!
I don't think she was kidding. It honestly doesn't surprise me that much from what I have seen around this town.

Very much agreed!! Pet stores should have the same eligibility forms to fill out like the shelters to ensure you're gonna take great care of your new pet.

Makes you wish that the machine in Honey, I shrunk the kids worked. It may open her eyes about the predator/prey relationship.

That is awful. I feel bad for the woman's daughter. I have a young friend whose first hamster was killed by her cat, and it was a really traumatic experience for her. That was a number of years ago and she still really misses him...
