I completely agree with you Glitch. I really enjoy the olympics normally but I will not be watching any of it this time. . . What the government is doing in order to make their city look better, is just making it look a lot worse to a lot of people. I actually wish that some countries (like ours) would take a stand against this and refuse to compete in the games. Like you said, it isn't the fault of the people running the olympics, but someone needs to take a stand and the only way they are going to stop this is if that happens.

There HAVE been some problems with coats, etc., coming into the US from both Asia and Europe, made from cat and dog hides. Attitudes toward pets around the world are very different from our own, and much closer to "livestock" or some such thing.

China has some real problems. If you imagine their population and the problems just feeding it, and then add in the additional burden of feeding pets and taking care of their daily needs, you can see that it wouldn't take much for pets to suddenly become entirely disposable. In fact, at one time owning a dog was illegal in China.

The desire to look good during the Olympics is a big drive in China today, but many experts predict that the whole event may become a disaster.

Boycott them and let them know you are doing it.

If anyone can come up with a list of sponsors please post it.
Let's do our part for the cats in China.

I sent this article to Peta.
I know that many times we don't agree with their policies but these cats need all the help that they can get and Peta has an organization already in place.

Those cats need action now!

I'm not sure how complete that is, but there's a listing.

One look at this....
http://www.buyhard.fsnet.co.uk/animalcruelty.htm
gives you an idea of how bad it really is for any animal there. I try not to buy things that are manufactured there but so many things are and that all comes down to money.

I watched the video of the fur farm on the peta site about a year ago and words just can`t explain how appalling it was.

Did you read the part where China stopped their TV stations from reporting this news.

I think the General Office and Media Communications.
Also, Coke and the other world wide companies.
I like the idea of sending a link to the article Susan.

Let's keep this thread bumped so other members will have a chance to voice their opinion to the right people.

I fear it's to late for many of those unfortunate cats in China but this should never happen again, including here in the US.

Save the Cats.

It's hard to be angry and cry at the same time.

These are some of the things that make me ashamed to be human. How can these people be so hardened to the feelings of other living creatures? All of us on this site seem to understand that our fur kids have little "souls" of their own. For some reason, even with the living condition of China I cannot understand how they can be like that. This has been an ongoing issue there and I'm always saddened about it.

I understand that we as humans use animals for food, clothing, etc., but these creatures should be treated humanely and with respect while alive and be put down in a quick and painless manner. To do so otherwise seems to me to be a crime against nature.

My husband keeps reminding me that it is a whole different way of life in China and that our cats probably get better food and medical care than many of the children in that country. That still does not alleviate my sadness. Maybe the musician in me makes me over-sensitive but I believe that there is a "responsibility" in being human - especially in the way we treat creatures other than ourselves.

I too make a point not to buy "Made in China".

Sorry for my rant. I'm saddened and disgusted by this problem.

No apology necessary....
your thoughts are appreciated and respected here.

Please e-mail the corporate sponsors listed in the link above.
Along with our attempts to boycott goods from China, the Olympic sponsors need to know that we are serious about the harm being done to cats because of the Olympics.
Let's try to turn this horrible situation into a positive for future generations of cats and other animals in China.

I'll definitely be sending some emails. Mostly I'm quiet and don't say much but I have to voice my opinion on this. We need to speak for those who cannot.

The Olympics, like most other things in the world, are all about the corporate dollar. It's a business first. The only way to send a message is to hit them in the wallet. McDonald's, Coca Cola, Samsung, Panasonic, Staples, Snickers, Budwieser, UPS, Kodak, Johnson & Johnson, Visa and GE won't be getting another cent from me.

We had a member recently who was attempting to rehabilitate two homeless cats. He said that the most of the Chinese people in his urban neighborhood thought he was nuts for caring about his cats.
He also talked about the tragic situation for dogs too.

However, there is an organization that is fighting for the rights of cats and dogs to live safe, decent lifes in China.
http://www.ccapn.ngo.cn/index_EN.php

That group closed a restaurant who served cat meat balls.
Do not read this unless you are prepared to feel ill when you finish.
http://zonaeuropa.com/20060620_1.htm

This group is making a difference...
Let's help them.

Unfortunately, my husband purchased a brand new TV before I learned about this, and it is a Samsung. I told him I won't make him return it, but we won't be giving any more money to those companies if we can help it.

The hard part is not buying Coca Cola products, because this campus is owned by Coke. If we go to a restaurant on campus, our choice is Coke or Coke products (including Dasani water, which is owned by Coca Cola). I think we'll have to make sure to eat off campus, and choose only restaurants that serve Pepsi (or beer).
