My 2 y.o. cat caught a small mouse in our Brooklyn apartment today. He might have bitten it before I got to him, but I did not see any blood. Im worried that he might have gotten some nasty virus or parasites from that mouse. Should I take him to a vet to get checked? His only abnormal behavior is hyperactivity – heâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s jumping on walls and running around like crazy, but I assume its because heâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s never seen a rodent before… or should I be concerned?

P.S. the mouse was humanely trapped and released outside.

lol- glad to see you let the mouse go! Even though they are dirty pests I do feel bad for them and have always tried to help/save them if my own cats got at them.

I think your cat will be fine. I use to live in an old farm house and unfortunately had mice come into the house all the time. Some were caught and half eaten while others were lucky enough to be saved and released. The point is, none of my cats got sick.

Definately keep an eye on your kitty but my guess is that he will be fine!! and I am sure he is only hyper because of the great fun he just had chaseing a mouse!!

Take care

worm him for tapeworms and he should be fine. Be sure and get the wormer from the vet though not just from a store.

It's pretty normal for cats to eat mice, being that they're a cat's normal prey.

Bad for the mouse, it probably didn't live as they're such delicate animals (compared to a cat).

I would say fleas is your only concern - and through that tapeworms if he gets/eats a flea.

The only thing I'd worry about is if the mouse ate poison (Dcon). But if the cat didn't eat the mouse, he's probably fine. As long as your cat is up to date on shots (including rabies) you shouldn't have to worry about anything
