I was wondering if anyone else has ever observed this. In the evening when she is sitting on my lap my girl Sasha will breathe very rapidly and apparently shallowly (if that's a word), you can see her abdomen moving up and down very quickly. I timed it at about 60 per minute (normal for cats is about 25-30). Her breathing isn't laboured at all nor is she making any sound, she's just breathing fast. She is definitely not stressed as she is usually asleep in the/my lap of luxury when this happens...maybe a dream in which she's active?? This is the only time I have noticed this, the rest of the time she is fine and she has no other symptoms of any kind.

I would call your vet. While it may be nothing, I would want to consider whether there could be an underlying heart problem.

One of our cats did that and we later found out that he had a heart condition. To be on the safe side, call your vet.

Thanks for the input, I'll give them a call. She is due next month for her annual check-up so maybe I'll take her in early.
