Olive came home from the vet this morning. She was spayed yesterday. She has always been a compulsive groomer and she will NOT stop licking her stitches. She's been home just over an hour and she has been grooming herself the entire time.
I tried putting a sock on her and it is not covering the incision. The incision is too far down on her belly so I can't get the sock to cover the area. Is there anything I can do to keep her from licking? I thought about Bitter Apple spray, but I don't know if that would be good to spray on the incision. Can I dab a little vinegar or lemon around the area? ANYTHING???
Thanks in advance for any tips!!

Call your vet and ask for an e-collar to put on her. That will keep her from licking the spot.

Good luck!!

The vet always told me that licking was ok....pulling and tugging at the stitches wasn't. You don't want to put anything like vinegar or bitter apple on her. It may burn!! Do you have an e-collar to use?

No, I don't have an e-collar.
Our vet clinic is a small, satellite clinic and doesn't even have any e-collars at our location. The joys of small town living.
I would have to make a 90 mile round-trip to go get one.

I just stuck her in a pet carrier. She is not too happy about it, but she stopped licking. I might be able to make an e-collar out of something here.
Thanks for that suggestion!

I don't know why I didn't think of an e-collar sooner! Thank you guys so much for the suggestions!!!
I have made one out of standard card stock, the kind used for scrapbooking.
It has worked so far. I have plenty more card stock to work with if she rips this apart, but so far, so good!! It's just awkward enough to where she can lick her legs, but not that incision! Woohoo!

Thank you, Thank you!!! I can finally get some other things done around here since I don't have to watch her as closely!

I made my kitty one once out of a paper plate. It wasn't the most attractive thing in the world but it worked!
