My wife and I have had our little cat now for almost a year and a half. Over the past year she has developed this one behavior that, while not bad, annoying, or anything else, just has us completely puzzled.

When I come home in the evenings from work, I will take off my shirt, and my undershirt to get changed into more comfortable clothes. Most of the time my undershirt will (now at least...because it is so amusing to watch) end up on the floor next to the laundry basket. About the time that little Nina realizes that my shirt has hit the floor, she is there sniffing at it until she can find the underarm area. At that point the licking, nuzzling, rolling and sometimes purring will begin.

There are times when she will even greet me at the door, and when I pick her up, she will proceed to move up to her favorite perch on my shoulder and hang down behind me to start doing it even before I get my shirt off.

We think that this might be somewhat related to the fact that from the day we got her she has went to my wife for love, but she has always come to me for security when something scared her. Any ideas on this one? Thanks for your help.

Sounds to me like your cat is trying to assert her own scents onto you/your clothing, and getting rid of the smells that you hve brought back from work! The area of yur underarm wil be the part of your clothing that has the least of the outside smells.

Good luck.

She might be attracted to the scent of your deodorant. One of my cats will stand on the bathroom sink area while I'm getting ready in the morning. Shortly after I apply my deodorant she's sniffing and licking at my armpits. My other cat will do much the same thing if given the opportunity. In contrast to your cat, mine only seem to do this right after I apply the deodorant.

It could also just be your armpit smell. Armpits have a very strong scent, obviously. She missed you and your scent all day and wants to comforted by the scent of someone she loves and who loves her.

I think it's rather cute, actually. A little gross to us humans, but cute nonetheless.
