Simone the kitten will be 4 months old in a couple of weeks and so I thought I'd get some Royal Canin Kitten to start mixing in with the Baby cat. I was surprised that the ingredients seemed significantly different at the top.

Baby cat:
Ingredients: Chicken meal, rice, brown rice, chicken fat (naturally preserved with mixed tocopherols, rosemary extract and citric acid), wheat gluten, corn, chicken, natural chicken flavor, dried egg powder, beet pulp (sugar removed), sodium silico aluminate, salmon oil, cellulose, pea fiber, soya oil, potassium chloride, calcium carbonate, potassium citrate, sodium tripolyphosphate, choline chloride, brewers yeast extract (Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation solubles), taurine*, L-carnitine, Vitamins [dl-alpha tocopherol (source of vitamin E), inositol, niacin, L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (source of vitamin C*), d-calcium pantothenate, biotin, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), riboflavin (vitamin B2), thiamine mononitrate (vitamin B1), vitamin A acetate, folic acid, vitamin B12 supplement, vitamin D3 supplement], Trace Minerals [zinc proteinate, zinc oxide, ferrous sulfate, manganese proteinate, copper proteinate, copper sulfate, manganous oxide, sodium selenite, calcium iodate], glucosamine hydrochloride, chondroitin sulfate, green tea extract, L-tyrosine, marigold extract.

Kitten:
Ingredients: Chicken meal, rice, corn gluten meal, corn, chicken fat (naturally preserved with mixed tocopherols, rosemary extract and citric acid), chicken, dried egg powder, natural chicken flavor, pea fiber, beet pulp (sugar removed), salmon oil, dried brewers yeast, sodium silico aluminate, potassium chloride, fructo-oligosaccharides, choline chloride, sodium chloride, L-lysine, brewers yeast extract (Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation solubles), calcium carbonate, sodium tripolyphosphate, taurine, Vitamins [dl-alpha tocopherol (source of vitamin E), L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (source of vitamin C*), niacin, biotin, riboflavin (vitamin B2), d-calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), thiamine mononitrate (vitamin B1), vitamin B12 supplement, folic acid, vitamin A acetate, vitamin D3 supplement], Trace Minerals [zinc proteinate, zinc oxide, ferrous sulfate, copper proteinate, copper sulfate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, sodium selenite, calcium iodate], marigold extract.

I was startled by the corn and corn gluten meal showing up so early in the list. It does in most of the kitten foods that Petsmart sells, but now I think I should shop around for a better dry to supplement her canned food.

Poor thing gets stalked by the adults for her dry food, so I don't leave it out for her, but use it as a supplemental snack for her 3rd meal of the day.

She's about 4 pounds now.

Charlie was 4 months old when we got him and on the RC Kitten and he was fine. Not sure if the breeder used the Baby Cat before that, but I see no problem in switching her over to Kitten.

And IMO she can go on the adult food by 6 months old. Has she been spayed yet? If not, when will she be done?

In April. That's when the vet recommended it. She won't do it before kitten is 5 months old. She's so tiny right now that I'm not opposed to it.

Regarding the food, I'm a bit concerned about the more prominent role of the corn and corn gluten meal in general, not necessarily about digestive upset. That said, almost every cat of mine seems to reject out of hand the better brands of canned and dry.

We feed RC (but the Urinary kind since Charlie's bout of UTI). However, we have always added extra protein in the form of boiled chicken, hamburger, etc. - so he's getting extra protein anyway.

If you feel you would like more protein, add the chicken/hamburger to her menu several times a week.
