Brushing Kitten's Teeth

ok, so I feel like such an ignorant pet parent. But, I just read in the health forum about brushing cat's teeth and I had no idea we were supposed to do this. I had a cat growing up with me for 16 years and I don't know if we ever brushed her teeth.

Should I buy a special brush for the kittens to get them used to it at a long age. How long do you brush for, how early do you start brushing their teeth, etc. Do certain foods make this not necessary?

No food makes brushing unnecessary. There are prescription foods that aid in cleaning teeth but they are very expensive and, I think, are still supposed to be used in conjunction with brushing. They make toothpaste specifically for dogs and cats, and it usually costs around $5 a tube. These toothpastes are enzymatic cleaners and come in flavors like chicken, seafood, and beef. My cats think it's a treat! It is a good idea to start when they're kittens, but if your cats are already adults that is okay, too. In an effort to get your cat used to it, because lets face it, if it's always a fight we usually stop doing it, put some on your finger and let them lick it off once a day. After a month or so, rub it on their teeth with just your finger. Do this until they're used to it. If it takes a month or two that's fine! With the enzymatic cleaners they clean even if you aren't brushing. Once they're okay with you putting your fingers in their mouth, start brushing them daily. (Remember, plaque hardens within 48 hours!) It only takes a minute of your time. Good luck!

Thanks so much! That is very helpful! I have three 6 week old kittnes, so I'll start with the "geting them used to it" process. Every day after dinner, they get brushed and cleaned w/ a baby wipe, so now they'll get a dab of kitty toothpaste too
