You know it angers me when people say well then don't have a pet because they cant afford expensive vet treatment at the drop of a hat. not all of us can save and have money lying around for emergencies for ourselves let alone a pet. Things happen and we are not always the ones to blame. I love my cats and I had to put one down because of a urinary blockage and I could not fork over over a thousand dollars plus for surgery and had to make the horrible decision of putting him down instead. I still am hurt over this and yet it was the right thing to do. I live on disability and just because I don't make good money does not mean that I can not care for a pet! If you refuse to spay and neuter and take for shots then yeah don't have a pet but no one needs to be denied a pet because they cant drop loads of cash at a moments notice.

I agree, people shouldn't be judgmental about others with limited income and resources when they are pet owners. I have found that if I'm honest with my vet and ask them for alternate methods, or med, they are more than willing to help me. Also I've found this site to be an outstanding source of information. I would have never known about cat viruses and herpes and homeopathic solutions to a lot of kitty health issues without this site. It's been very helpful too when talking to my vet about meds that might be available on line that the clinics no longer carry in favor of newer more costly drugs. In the meantime just love your kitties and try not to let others opinions get you down.

Tricky subject this has turned into. But i feel like every pet owner should save at least $500 or so for any health issues their pet might have. But im sure many cant afford this. Sometimes you get lucky andthe pet lives long life. Pet insurance would be pretty useful in these cases. I get a high deductible one ($500) with no payout limits and it costs less than $15/month.

I agree. As a pet owner, you HAVE to configure a small amount of money in your budget in the event of a vet visit. Nobody really has the funds to help a cat for a really big problem, like cancer, but I agree that befoe you decide to get a pet ask yourself: Can I logically afford it?

It truly is a wonderful site. To have other cat people to talk to and figure things out and to understand a problem better by getting the advice and wisdom of other cat people is.....well....priceless!!

I agree, sometimes it's very hard to take your pet to the vet when some of them charge more than if you were bringing a kid to the pediatrician! While I keep a credit card free of charges and to be used only in an emergency (which vet care would be, for me), I googled this issue and found this link---it might be helpful to someone! :)

I have a situation & question alot like this one- I have a spayed 8 yr old DSH that today left a tiny drop of poo outside of litter box-when I cleaned it up I noticed a little red blood -never noticed that before-I will call for an app for her but does anyone else have experience with this-I have had cats for 7 years now &  still learning about felines but up until now never noticed any blood in pee or poo

It's often related to constipation. A vet visit is a good idea!

Just like in people, bright red blood on the anus means the source of blood is at the anus, such as a tear, or just inside. Blood from further up the colon is black in color, so black, tarry stools mean internal bleeding. It sounds like constipation, but only a vet could diagnose. I would monitor the stools and see if they are hard, and treat for constipation. There are many solutions for treating this on back threads, number one being to increase the amount of water the cat gets by providing several bowls in different places, running water, and cat fountains. Of course if the bleeding continues or gets worse then a vet visit is needed.  All the luck!

dcheung-

Some of these posts in this thread really disappoint me.

Whenever I see changes with my Angel, I monitor her for a short time.  If symptoms persist, for more than a day or so, I seek medical attention.  Most vets will work with you when emergencies arise, especially for costly treatments.  If your vet won't do a payment plan, find a new vet.  Most vets would rather set up a payment plan than see a pet not be treated.  One symptom can be the result of many conditions from benign to severe.  Better to set a payment plan and find out that the condition is not threatening than to worry.  And also better to seek treatment than for your pet to suffer.

I wish you and your pet the best of luck.

Wooowww. Most of these completely ridiculous and down right mean responses make me so sad. And worried for the state of the cats subjected to those mean and ridiculous people. People that can't afford proper health care usually find a way to get their pets care before they get it themselves so stop being petty. More often then not, we acquire our pets knowing they come first.
