Checking for parasites is a good idea.

I'd also suggest switching your kittens to the best quality wet food you can afford. It's much better for them than the dry.

I have been going through this with my Bengal kitty/teenager. On another cat site I got some really good information. There is another parasite that is like Giardia it is called Tritrichomonas Foetus. I think there is a special test to diagnose this. I am just learning about all of this and thought I would pass on info as I am learning. I know if Zoey doesn't clear up this will be my next quest at the vet.

The test is called the "pouch test". It takes a week to complete and then is observed under a microscope.

Tri-trich is a tough parasite to get rid of and even more tough for the Vet to I.D.

I hope Zoey doesn't have that. But, you can get rid of it if she does. Just be prepared for a little work.

my vet told me that besides being hard to diagnose that if it was tritrichomonas there isn't much to do other than let it run it's course and it does eventually go away. i think it's the only parasite we didn't test for.

I've also read that T.foetus is difficult to treat. But it is of value to know if that is the cause of your kitties diarrhea. If you know your kitty has it you know to let it run it course otherwise you know to look for a different cause.

Your Vet needs to do a little more research. It can take a very long time to go away and it may never fully go away, your cat will just cope better. (or not)

There is a treatment protocol that involves the drug known as Ronidazole.

Here are some links for you and your Vet to study.

Thank you for links, I know I will bring these up to my vet in my next course of action. Zoey has the symptoms. Her poops look like cow pies, and she has smelly farts that will make you want to leave the room. She has been like this since she came from breeder. Now I have a bigger problem cause I have 5 other cats. When they did her blood panel they did see that she had digestive problems, which led him to believe it is IBD. I am assuming that the parasite would be a big cause for that.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, this is good information to better equip me when I go back to the vet.

Glad I could help!

Hopefully Zoey doesn't have Tri-trich, but if she does, now you know it can be treated.

They were able to see Jasper this morning. He doesn't have any parasites but they didn't test for giardia because the meds he prescribed will take care of a lot of different things that are harder to test for. If he has giardia or the bacterial overgrowth in the intestines, or a couple other things, this stuff should cure him. He prescribed Metronidazole, and also some probiotics called gastriplex. He said he never would have guessed Jasper even had diahrrea because he looks so healthy otherwise.

edited: I wonder if the Metronidazole he prescribed is the same thing as what Kai Bengals mentioned, ronidazole?

Ronidazole is a different drug than the Metronidazole, although they can produce similar side effects. Metro will not kill the Tri-trich parasite, but works well on Giardia.

metronidiazole works for stopping diarrhea as well, maybe thats why it was prescribed too. it has worked wonders on my persian who has chronic diarrhea from his ringworm medication.... now, lets see when he stops it
he was also using tylosine for the diarrhea, but metro has worked WAYYYYYY better.
it is also an antibiotic, and works on gardia....
