I've had my kitten for about a month, he is about 5 months old now. He has had diahrrea since I got him. I figured it was just stress and adjustment at first but its not going away. Its not watery but its not formed. He does always make it in the litter box. I plan on asking my vet about it too but I wanted to get some input from here. I am feeding the same food as all my other cats. He seems very healthy, playful, affectionate, bright eyes.

Has he been checked for all parasites? Coccidia and gardia, too? If that has been checked a couple of times and nothing has been found, maybe he has a food allergy.

Java had this problem when i first got her [foundling]. she didn't have worms... she had an intestinal bacterial overgrowth that took 2 rounds of antibiotic to get rid of, plus some probiotic treatment after that. definitely ask the vet about it!

Thanks
He has been wormed, I will ask the vet to check him for all those parasites and the intestinal bacteria overgrowth. And make sure he doesn't eat anything dairy (I don't really feed him anything dairy but he may have snuck a bite here or there).

If you're feeding him a diet of only dry food, that might be a problem. Kittens can have a difficult time (as can adult cats) digesting all the carbs in dry food. Diarrhea can sometimes result.

If he does eat canned food, sneak a little extra water or plain chicken broth into it to add a little hydration, since diarrhea uses up a lot of water that a cat needs.

He does eat dry, maybe I should look for a brand with less carbs?

Have you been giving him any milk, this could be the cause, it often gives cats diariaah.

Milk is fine, provided that it's lactose free, goat's milk, or the special cat milk. Other dairy - cheese is ok in small amounts and aged cheeses will be tolerated better.

I'm lactose intolerant and have found what I can and cannot eat, since I sometimes buy lactose free milk I share that with my cats - they've never gotten diarrhea from it.

Just a bit of info for those that keep going on about milk.

My Tomas has had horrible gas since the day I found him and occasionally diarrhea - no causes found, I've tried other foods too. I think I'm going to take one person suggestion and the recent good review and try the Eagle Pack Holistic Solutions as well.

Oh, I forgot to mention that, both of my new kittens (brother and sister) have horrible gas! But only Jasper has the diahrrea.

Have him tested for parasites asap.

If negative........

Then I would try restoring the beneficial bacteria in his intestinal tract. Benebac is a good product. There are others as well, such as Kitty Bloom.

Chronic loose stools reek havoc on the intestinal flora, so if he doesn't have a parasite, try to restore his gut with these products, and upgrade his food to something with less fillers.

I'm going to make an appt for him tomorrow but I dont know how to collect his poop for testing. How do you do that when you have more than one cat and the poop is always covered with cat litter?

Honestly... It sounds gross but I would play "litter box monitor" and just use a clean small plastic cup (like a disposable bathroom type cup)... and catch it in the cup as it comes out.

I may have an easier time at that then most, Tomas likes to tell me he's going to use the litter box or if Sho is trying to use it.

Good luck getting a sample and figuring/fixing what the problem is.

I move the box to where I can hear when they are digging it in. I peep to see who it is and if it is the one whose poop I want I bag it as soon as they are through. If it isn't the "target pooper" I scoop the box and keep waiting.

And it doesn't matter if it is covered with cat litter.

Oh thanks, if cat litter can be on it that makes it a lot easier.
