No. I declared personal bankruptcy at the end of November and am currently in a bankrupt state until the end of August. Technically I'm not even supposed to be running up a bill at the vet's office. And I doubt they would let me if I had told them about my bankruptcy...which I didn't do.

I haven't called to any other place to check about pricing, because after googling I found out that there would be an exam fee and most vets would want to run their own blood work and not rely on something from someone else, and that is racking up even more fees that I can't afford.

Unfortunately it's not just what is best for Chynna at this point. My finances are paramount in this. I can't keep living on $200.00 per month for groceries, toilteries and medications. Which is what I've been doing. And I have to think about my upcoming RN license expense.

I'm feeling pretty selfish that I have to think about money and my own needs when my baby is in such need.

I would at least call another clinic just to see what they would charge to have the one tooth pulled. You might also talk to your vet and explain that his detailed plan is not an option, and that you are facing a choice between trying to have the one tooth pulled to see if it helps or putting her to sleep. You are the person who best knows your situation--don't let the vet bully you into doing something you aren't able to do. If you explain your limits, perhaps the vet can work within them to try to give Chynna a chance for recovery.

If no vet is willing or able to help, then you have done all you can. You have given Chynna a good life and a happy home, and that's far more than most kitties ever get.

ETA: If you bring copies of the bloodwork and other records, I don't think they would run the tests again. Also, you might want to look in the newspaper or other sources of local advertising--some vets have coupons for a free first visit.

I am still going to call first thing tomorrow morning and ask about an estimate for a full extraction. I'll push to find out about the price for one extraction.

I do want to give her a chance.

I would definitely get prices from other vets. As someone else said just get a copy of her records and labs from the current vet. I think the price he wants to charge you for the extraction is beyond ridiculous. One of my senior cats just had three teeth extracted last week and I paid $115. They never even mentioned taking x-rays. They went in to pull one tooth and found two other bad ones and pulled them too.

As for the difficulty in giving the antibiotics...I went through this nightmare too. I went through three rounds of antibiotics to get rid of a simple UTI and my kitty was still peeing blood...all because I could never get the meds in his mouth. We tried liquid and pills. Finally I told the vet I would bring him in everyday and let her medicate him. She asked me if I could give a shot and I came home with seven syringes filled with antibiotic. I have never given oral medicines since.

I hope everything works out for you and your kitty.

Call other vets, I urge you. I agree that you should be able to bring copies of the exam records, bloodwork, etc to avoid those costs.

I hope you can sort something out, but please dont feel bad if you can't - it could be something different that is causing her not to eat, and she is a good age. There is also the worry about her iffy kidneys, that you could make a lot worse, so there is a chance you wouldnt buy her that much time if you did do the dental. Good luck with whatever happens.

Chynna is still with me. I cancelled the appointment I had this morning, and instead rebooked her for the dental surgery on Wednesday. I take her to the Vet tomorrow morning for 24 hours of hydration. She is having only the needed dental work done, and not a full mouth extraction.

A higher power was looking out for Chynna and let's just say that miracles do happen! Both me and Chynna have a great deal to be thankful for right now.

I talked to the vet in great detail today. He is taking every precaution to preserve her kidney function. And I asked him the crucial question of "Am I doing the right thing given her age?" and he told me that I was. He said that if Chynna was his kitty, that because of her health and disposition, he would take the risk and have the dental work done. And he's going to treat her as if she were his own kitty. That made me feel good about it.

I still have a lump in the pit of my stomach though. Probably worry that things go well.

I'll miss getting my love bugs tomorrow when I'm in bed I've gotten so used to her cuddling and purring us both to sleep. But the trade off is that hopefully I'll have some more months or years for lots more nose kisses from her.

I took her into the vet at 8:30 am for her hydration. I couldn't get her to eat much yesterday, maybe 1/2 a tin of food for the whole day. And today she didn't want the syringe food, so I tried some Friskies beef pate and let her eat what she could on her own. I asked if they could try and give her something more today because I know she's hungry.

They said that they will call me throughout the day tomorrow to let me know how she is doing.

Thanks so much! I sure could use the hugs. I'm a nervous wreck. First I faced having to euthanize her, and now the worry of surgery. The vet is very good, and he's doing everything he can for her kidneys and to make sure that she has a healthy mouth when done so that she can eat again. But I'm still a wreck! They said they will call me with updates, and that I can call them as many times as I want. I think I might just go and sit there and wait in their waiting room!

I can well imagine you are a nervous wreck with all you've had to consider. Sounds as if things are moving ahead well now, and soon your girl will be on the road to recovery. Sending lots of for both of you.
