I took in a stray cat after my neighbors moved last September and left her behind. They had abused her so it took me about 3 months to finally get her to come to me and when she did I grabbed her up and brought her in the house. Because I had never seen her pregnant I assumed she was fixed. Shame on me. I never heard any of the noises a cat in heat make but she did get out once and I can not remember how long ago maybe a month or a month in a half ago. She was gone for 3 days before she came to me again so I could grab her up.
She is a loving cat and we adore her. Unfortunately my husband and I were both unemployed until recently so we could not take her to the vet but we could not leave her out on her own to starve. Now my husband is working and we can take her in to the vet when he gets his first check in 2 weeks. In the meantime about a week ago I noticed that she is getting plump and she has started to follow me everywhere I go in the house. She hates to be away from me or my daughter. I am now wondering if she might be pregnant. Her belly is hard and you can see a definate shape on her, not just looking fat. I do have two male cats but both are fixed. So the only time she could have gotten pregnant is when she escaped for 3 days, but wouldn't she have started to show before now. And then I heard about cats that are never pregnant but have fake pregnancies.
I am worried about it and at this point if she is pregnant then I will of course take her in to be fixed as soon as she is all done so we don't have any other accidents. I just have never owned a female cat that got pregnant so I have no idea what I need to do for her until I can get her to the vet.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I have never had a pregnant cat either but somebody will be along to help you. In the meantime, I wanted to commend you on taking this cat in. Best of Luck!

One of the major signs of pregnancy is the nipples enlarging and becoming more pink. I'd say if she has that, along with the round tummy and a personality change, then it sounds very likely. It's possible that she is just now beginning to show because maybe she is carrying a small litter. If you can, post some pics... we may be able to tell from those if she looks pregnant or not.

If she is pregnant, she needs to be started on a high quality kitten food ASAP.

You can do a google image search of "pregnant cat" to get an idea of what a pregnant cat looks like. There is a pretty strong chance that she is if she got out during those 3 days. The nipples will be larger/pinker, she'll be hungrier too. Sometimes increased affection is also a sign of pregnancy. I think the stomach will grow larger at around 5 weeks.

She should be eating a quality kitten food for now

Like everyone else said, posting a picture of her will make it easier for us to see if she looks pregnant.

Just in case she is in fact pregnant, put her on a high quality kitten food. If you need help with choosing a kitten food, let us know and we will be happy to help.
