This weekend our local movie theater showed all five Academy Award nominated animated short films. DH and I decided to go out and see them. Unfortunately we missed the first one, but I'll walk you through the last four.

I Met the Walrus
- A digital flash animation of an interview a 15 year old boy did with John Lennon. The animation is refreshing, but a bit on the distracting side. This was my favorite out of the four we saw.

Madame Tutli-Putli
- Stop motion animation about a woman's transformation from passive to active. It was good, but nothing ground breaking.

Même les Pigeons vont au Paradis (Even Pigeons Go To Heaven)
- This is the one we missed.

My Love (Moya Lyubov)
- I have NO idea how this even got a nomination. The story was insulting, and the animation wasn't that good. If this comes on a DVD set just skip it. You aren't missing anything.

Peter & the Wolf (the winner)
- This will end up being shown in English classes for years to come. It is the classic tale with the classic music, but not with the classic ending. It was a really good example of how stop motion animation can be beautiful and realistic at the same time. As Americans our only examples of stop motion are Rudolph and The Nightmare Before Christmas (for those huge Tim Burton fans there's also Vincent and The Corpse Bride). Those two films don't even really show what stop motion can do. This film does, and that's why it won.

EDIT: Yes. I see too many movies.

Sounds like a really cool way to spend a weekend!

I'll have to see if I can get my hands on a copy of Peter and the Wolf.

This sounds great! I assume the latter was Russian? You do sound like an Aficionado. Have you seen Metropolis (1926) and if so, how do you rank it?

How lucky. I saw the short clips on award night and I was particularly intrigued by I Met the Walrus, Peter & the Wolf and whic ever one was animated in oil paints on glass purely for the animation. I thought they all looked interesting and for short films you haven't lost much if they are bad.

I've seen Metropolis (1926) and really liked it. One must understand though that there are portions of the film that have been lost forever, so it may not make sense in places. My ideal for this would be to see the "old" version of Metropolis and then see the Anime feature film by the same name. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0293416/

They both deal with the same subject and both follow a similar story line, but one is just a modern telling of the tale.

To be honest though of all the silent films I've seen (and I've seen a lot of them) The Passion of Joan of Arc is my all time favorite.

It is just beautiful.

EDIT: I believe that Peter and the Wolf is English not Russian. It was done for Channel Four Films.

I saw the live-action ones here (the theatre showing it is pretty much a block away, I hadn't realized they weren't showing them everywhere
)

They were great-- my favorite was the one that won "Mozart of Pickpockets" but the Italian one with the 'substitute' teacher was pretty great too.

Does the Cedar Lee have the live-action ones too? You should def see them!

They did, but we needed to go grocery shopping.

I wish that someone would just put these out on one DVD so I could see them all.
