Sigh....this has been going on for awhile- and I realy want to do something about it. Im tired of the pee smell in the apartment. We have another cat that I think he does that for so that she wont use it. Everytime I put deodorizer on it, he just does it again. And i know this is cat behaivor, but can I do anything to stop it? We dont live in a big place and the smell is getting to both the hubby and me.

Some cats just plain won't cover anything *ahem* Stuart. It shouldn't smell like pee at all as long as you're using a good cat litter. I use Fresh Step and any time the cats go in the litter box all you can smell is the litter. It's a very strong litter and when it is moved around it lets off a clean scent. Try that out.

Mine doesn't cover her pee normally. She just jump away real fast from her box after finishing. But with poop, it's another story. She'll make sure everything is covered, piling the litter mountain high and will also scratch the area outside the box.

I use a Petmate Hooded Litter Box with a filter so the smell really doesn't bother me at all, and I live in a studio apartment. It really depends on what kind of litter box and litter you are using.

We have the Petmate Hooded litter boxes as well, and are using Fresh Step litter, and also currently trialling Worlds Best Cat Litter - we have 3 cats, and 2 boxes and never have a pee smell. If the house has been shut up all day and it's been hot, it's a little cat smelly, but an open window for 10 minutes soon fixes that.

What sort of litter boxes do you have, how many, and what sort of litter do you use?

We are using a very cheap cat litter. What you guys are saying makes sense. We are also using covered litter boxes. So maybe we will give the fresh step a try. The cat litter is from walmart, it's supposed to give off a scent, but it dosnt really give off a strong one.

Maybe not to your nose. But your cat's nose may indicate differently. Maybe he's not covering it because it's a more pleasant smell to him than the smell of the litter.

I think most cats prefer unscented litter.
