Kitten Update

Well I thought I should do a follow up now that things have settled.

The kittens are doing great. In fact, they're little piggies and getting chubby bellies.

They're now pretty well litter trained, sort of eating dry food (but much prefer bottle) and they've learned to walk well. It's funny, they can run short distances, but it's so hilarious when they do. They aren't very good at control yet. Also, they like to pounce now. Usually on nothing. Then they'll start freaking out trying to paw at things that don't exist. I just bought a really nice area rug that goes under the coffee table. It's got an elaborate design on it, and they try to paw at some of the pieces as though they weren't attached.

They've also learned to use my legs as trees. When I'm home I wear sweats. Cotton sweats. They have no trouble scurrying up my leg. I want to deter this but for now it's ok. The little orange one trys to jump up the couch. But it's made of leather, and he can't sink his paws in so he bounces off. usually getting mad and running away after trying.

They both think my thumbs are pacifiers and I've got to figure out a way to get past this. they can bite HARD when they work my thumb back to their back teeth and really get leverage. i mean incredibly hard. brats.

I want to let everyone know I really appreciate the help you've all given me. I don't know what I'd have done without this place. The first week was touch and go. But i've been giving them their medicine daily and the runny poop is gone! So the parasites seem to have lost the battle. I'll still give them the meds until they're gone though.

I believe the kittens are at about 5 and 1/2 weeks now. They've certainly grown. When I got them both were under 10 oz and now they're both over 16.

Thanks again folks, I'm very appreciative.

Here's a quick pic. nothing special. I need to take more of wilbur but he attacks the camera.

Oooohhhh! How sweet! What a pretty little girl!

You CAN clip their claws (very carefully, since they're so small) and keep some of the pain out of the climbing. Try not to let them get in the habit of chewing on your hand; as they get bigger, so do their muscles!

They are so darling at that age, and you certainly are their angel of salvation.

Wonderful that they are doing well. She has such pretty markings, the little girl.

Such good news. You can put bad tasting stuff on your fingers as a deterrent - I don't know if that's ok with kittens this young. Bitter Apple, I think ....

Some posters will tell you that their cats actually LIKE the stuff... so I don't know.

Anyone - is bitter apple ok to use with kittens this young to try to save Fastnoc's fingers????/

Why thank you. I'm pretty biased but I think she's pretty nifty myself. Her and her brother.

It's really been fun. Since we got over the bad parts they're just fantastic. I don't lock them up at all anymore. I've kitten proofed the place and let them roam. I noticed they are still pooping beside the litter box sometimes, but I think as time goes on they'll figure that out.

I was thinking about that too. I don't want to put anything hot on, but there's got to be something I can use. MAN they can chomp!

I do clip their nails...Well the ones I can actually get them to hold still long enough to cut. I just clip the very tip off so they aren't sharp. I've got clippers that look more like wire cutters so they're nice and sharp. it's just tough to get them to hold still long enough. Right now I've been waiting until they sleep (the prefer sleeping on my shoulder or half sitting on the couch and half sitting in my lap. Hard to explain. But when they're zonked out I can get a couple clipped before they wake up!

I can't wait, I broke down today and bought a nice HD Video camera. I can't believe I did this. but it's over now lol. So i'll be putting some videos on youtube that will probably make you sick.

I know I shouldn't post so many pictures of them but it's fun doing it.

Porno kitten!

Ha ha ha. What a cute girl. Where are the pics of Wilber?!

I wonder if there's something you can use as a "kitten pacifier" to give your fingers a break...anyone know?

Awwww.... the little girl has a white belly!!! DEfinitely a calico!

Re: them chewing on your fingers - still think you should get a dummy momma cat in the form of a stuffed animal and put something on it with your smell. Bitter Apple isn't hot, it just tastes yucky!!

LB- you can always try a kitten attractant... don't know where to get it, but others on this site have mentioned it.

And as far as video clips on YouTube- bring 'em on, baby! We loooove that stuff here. You're in good company.....

aww -- what a cute baby

orphan kittens tend to chew fingers as they have no mother to tell them otherwise.

And I use Bitter Apple spray around kittens with no problem. When they start exploring and getting around wires, etc. then that is when I use the spray. By the time they leave at 4 months old, none of them are wire chewers

I think I'll try the bitter apple thing. I just dont want them to not want to be held because they don't like the smell or taste. Not sure how they'll react but it's worth a shot.

I'm excited. I ordered the camera and it'll be here tomorrow. So i'm sure I'll be putting some videos up. it's an HD camera but I think that's useless on Youtube. I've got my own servers and sites so I'll put something on there maybe. Anxious to get the camera now!

Can you tell me where I'd find the bitter apple spray? I need to get more formula today anyway so if they have it at the pet shop I'll get it there.

I'll follow up with some results once I find the stuff.

Major Chain pet stores should have bitter apple. I think it has varous brand names - just ask when you get there.

I don't think they will reject cuddling b/c that is a source of comfort for them, too. YOu can always make "burritos" out of them, too as a comfort tool. Like swaddling a baby.

About clipping nails:
What I do is only clip when they're sleeping. You can do it much faster that way and if they do wake up during the process, just nicely speak their name and pet them gently back to sleep. It works really good for me and has done so on even the youngest of kitties. Since kittens especially sleep alot, this shouldn't be too hard to find a time to clip clip!!

Good luck
