My sister emailed me today. If anyone has any answers or suggestions please post them or send me a private message. Her cat is a tripod (missing 1 back leg) but cannot stand upright due to spinal damage.

i need to put your kitty knowledge to the test...

i have noticed the issues of poo sticking to oliver's bum have increased in the last few months or so. i have also noticed he is not really cleaning himself all that well. while bathing him seems to work, i damn near throw out my back every time i try to bathe him. i noticed today he really smelled bad...like poo. so i checked his bum and found that it pretty dirty. i'm not sure he can reach down there too well due to size and his disability. i have tried the pet wipes to wipe him, but it doesn't do much good. do you know anyone, either on the boards you are on or in person, that have a 3-legged kitty without the ability to walk upright and have poo issues like i do? i am getting really tired of having to was my rug and floor in the bathroom almost every day because of smeared poo. i don't know what else to do so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Are the stools not firm enough? That would make it messier. You've been around long enough to know the suggestions for that.

Maybe a type of schedule. Schedule meals and know when he goes to the litter box and assist him.
He may have problems cleaning because he may hurt, he may even have some pain while bearing down to poo - might be why some ends up on him.

Newspaper and/or lay down plastic on the bathroom floor.
And use a wet rag to clean him up every time he gets out - again that would take monitoring but it would cut down on the amount of full baths.

Is he long haired? I guess even if he's not, would a sanitary shave help? I take Isaac to the vet & have them do a sanitary a couple times a year. He doesn't have problems cleaning himself, but does leave little "Gifts" around the house when his hair gets too long.

He's eating Wellness weight control dry and a very small amount of Fancy Feast daily. I can't remember the fiber level of Wellness weight control.

Let me know if you have any more thoughts on food...

Nuh uh...might give me away!
It sounds as if he's a big boy...that can definitely be part of the issue. If he can't reach, then he can't clean.

If she's still concerned, she could try talking to her vet and see what suggestions the vet might have.
