Katie my 3 year old calico all of a sudden started howling and hissing at everyone this morning. she started the day normally by chasing the dog upstairs to my room. Then she was sitting in the window sill and started howling and my dog ran up to her to see the wierd noise and she started hissing and kind of laying over on her side. noone could get near her and she went and hid in the bathroom. after work she seemed to be ok when my girlfriend went up to check on her but as soon as anyone else came in the room she would start howling again. i talked to her and approached her slowly and she was ok but every time there is a noise or a new person comes in the room she wigs out until they talk to her and let her smell them.

Im afraid she has lost eyesight or something... im not sure what else could have caused this wierd change in my cat. she has a vet appointment tomorrow i was just curious if anyone has had this happen or heard of it happening.

It's possible she saw another cat outside. For some reason, this can cause problems with some cats, making them very aggressive toward any other animal that comes near them, including people.

But keep a very close eye on her; she may have another problem.

If the odd behavior persists tonight, it would probably be in the cat's best interest to get her in to see a vet soon. Better safe than sorry.

Sounds like redirected aggression, some cats take a long time to get over things they see. They can react strangely to sounds, smells, and even things they see outside or on tv... you might not even imagine what it was that freaked her out. Have you every tried Feliway? Might want to look into it, the room diffuser works well for this sort of thing.

thanks for the replies! jen you might be onto something..... we have left her alone and she does fine but as soon as she goes into the dining room where she first wigged out, she gets all worked up again. im going to look into the feliway because now it seems as though she is just getting pissy and getting over it..... we have bleached the floor in the dining room to see if some smell is throwing her off....so we will see....
