OMG! I so sympathize with you.

For 3 years I had such intense rib pain on my left side that the act of coughing, burping, hiccoughing and sneezing nearly sent me through the roof and literally made me cry.

Use a pillow and splint your chest to help reduce the pressure. Squeeze the pillow really tightly to your chest when you hiccough. It won't stop it from hurting, but it will make it hurt less. Also take something for pain!

I suggest you get an extra pillow and hit your DH over the head with it if he's close enough.
It may not stop the hiccups but it will make him stop laughing.

to DH. I had a bad case of the hiccups (though I'm sure it is not 1/4 the pain you are going through) a couple of days ago and my DH found it amusing. All I could do is hiccup and glare at him.

I so should have done that. He was worried, but we were both giggling, because it was just a sharp pain only as I hiccuped and had no idea when they were coming on.

They're gone now, but they always come back a couple of times before they properly go.

I have a red heart shaped pillow
I still use it regularly for non-heart related matters - I
my heart pillow!

For future reference, here's a quick little meditation that has never failed to stop hiccups for me, or for anyone I've tried it on:

It helps to raise both arms up high, lean your head back a little, and take a nice deep breath... then just close your eyes and imagine...

...the warm, liquid light of the sun...

...pouring down like honey into your hands...

...and gently spiraling down through your arms...

...warming you everywhere it touches...

...easing down into your chest...

...sinking deeper, warm and soothing...

...and finally settling into a calm, still pool of golden light in your abdomen.

Sounds silly, even to me... but if you'll give it a sincere try, it'll work -- promise!

For future reference! My mom gets hiccups and they last for hours... she had them for 9 hours one day! We went through a huge list of cures... And the thing that always helps both of us is a spoon full of sugar! It really does get rid of them!

Man... my hiccups hurt and I've never had surgery...

*note to self... never have surgery!*

And nothing much works to cure them except forgetting about them...

Though as a kid I pushed the sugar cure even when it didn't work the first five times....

I can't imagine how bad that must of hurt!! When I had my tubal I couldn't even move for days! And there was no broken bones there! (although there was a severly swollen belly that looked 9 months pregnant and HUGE bruises.. I took pictures... Think Im gonna sue!!
)

I hope they never come back again!! Have your DH try rubbing your feet for a while... might not take away the hiccups, but it will sure feel good!

The best cure I've found for hiccups is a slice of lemon with bitters poured on it, sprinkled with sugar. Bitters you should be able to find at a liquer store, but it doesn't have any alcohol in it. It looks nasty and tastes even nastier but it will stop the hiccups. I think basically it shocks the system enough that they will stop (yeah, I learned this from a bartender).

I also sometimes use drinking from a glass upside down. Basically put your head between your knees and drink from the opposite side of the glass. But, that may not be the best thing since you are still recovering from surgery....

I hate hiccups and they can be painful anyway, I can't imagine what they would feel like for you. Good luck!

yikes.

I remember a sneezing bout I had after my surgery (I was cut open from solar plexus to pubic bone and lasered shut, no stitches.)

It felt like my guts were gonna go flying out every time I sneezed. ouchie.

squeezing a pillow to my tummy really helped, still hurt like hell though.
